dies and starts again
86 944na/automatic: out of the blue while driving it just quit, pulled over, sat for a few minutes (5) then it started right up; sounds like dieseling when it dies. This has happened two other times, nothing consistent about a pattern of sitting or driving. I am thinking something in the fuel, poor filter perhaps. Any other thoughts? Austen

its your DME relay aka fuel pump relay, pick up a new one for $30ish and your dieing woes will be forgotten.

could also be the ignition switch - wiggle the key around while started and see if any amount of wiggling / pressure kills the car...

Sounds like fuel pump going bad. Feel if it's hot next time it shuts down. Its by passenger rear wheel. They get hot and stop working. Had same probablem with my Accura. But it could also be something like Fuel pump Relay. (also get hot) I think you can try tapping on the relay panel to. But that usually a bad solder joint.
I would think a failing Ignition switch issue would not require cool down time, so you could try that right after car shuts off. Relay's lot cheaper than pump so Phillys probably on to it.

I dont know about you guys, but my ignition switch gets pretty warm after a lot of use... i've taken it apart and there's no signs of shorting or anything like that, nor does anything beyond the actual switch get warm...
I found that when i had my ignition switch problem, it would only work when it was warm from previous use. a little backwards to what you're experiencing, but for a $13 repair, it's worth looking into.

Hi Eldorado,
From an electrical point of view you should not be continually pulling much current through the key switch. (current=heat) Most key switched devices pull a fraction of the current of the starter so after running I can't think why your switch is hot. Maybe a hole in heater duct just above it, or return current from something on the dash, blinkers, horn wipers, and high beam switchs. Or maybe someone did an Radio install and hooked up the Power feed directly off this line. Lot of possible answers. But if it's not to bad and it's been there for awhile, wouldn't worry till I smell smoke.

Thanks for the thoughts. I picked up a relay from the dealer, the old one was very hot when I installed the new one,so we will see what happens. I also inquired about exhaust gaskets for my '72 911 and they wanted $19.75 each, at least the parts guy laughed too. Austen
