Porsche Branded Oil…Cut To The Chase?

Anyone else here try out the “Porsche Branded” 10W50 motor oil that is supposedly precisely spec’d to our cars?

Yeah, I know…crazy expensive - but I’m seriously thinking that I’ll treat my recently rebuilt engine to a fill of this particular brew come spring, and I’d like to hear from others who may have some experience with this oil. Anyone?

You're most likely paying for the name and the fancy bottle.
For what it's worth , i've been using Amsoil Dominator 15/50 in my race car for years and it's a lot less expensive than Porsche branded oil and it has been proven to perform well under the toughest conditions ...

Cheers

Looks like the Porsche branded oil is cheaper than the Amsoil Dominator (70.00/5 liters Porsche, 75.00/4 quarts amsoil) - but is your info different?

Mobil1 for me. I disassembled about 50 engines and could always tell the ones using full synthetic vs. the ones using conventional oils. Sludge=conventional; light brown color=synthetic

You know, it's not like Porsche is running a refinery.

I know that OEM’s often formulate their own branded oil to meet their specifications. That being said I’m a big fan of old school Mobile one. I also have torn apart motors with many miles and the evidence is there.

I’ve been running with Mobil 1 0W40 this winter (to below zero F in Vt.)…figuring that as my new bearing clearances are very close to what this particular oil specifies, that I’m safe using it, and so far, all seems well.

While I’d had good luck with Mobil-1 10/40 “High Mileage” oil in the past as a three-season (spring/summer/fall) motor oil - it was after I’d rebuilt my engine that it seemed that this oil might not be as appropriate…considering that seals and bearing shells are all new. In other words, the “High Mileage” formulation, which is supposedly designed to extend the useful life of older, possibly slightly hardened seals (according to Mobil literature) might actually be counterproductive for a recently rebuilt engine.

Thing is…I feel that a 10/40 formulation (synthetic) is about right for the spring/summer/fall climate here in northern Vermont - so if there is another 10/40 formulation that anyone here could suggest…I would certainly look into this.

Otherwise…I’m really wanting to get off of this “Motor Oil Merry Go Round,” and if this costs me a bit extra with the Porsche formulation…then so be it.

Most "Factory" Motors oils are made by a different manufacture. For instance. GM's Dexos is made by Exxon-Mobil.

Then again...Porsche has been developing a synthetic fuel which the goal of relatively low emissions - and from what I can see they've had some promising early results with this. So perhaps the same minds were at work in the development of these (three) motor oils? If this is the case, then I'd feel even more encouraged to pony up the dough and give this oil a try.

I registered for the preferred customer program with Amsoil and they give you a pretty significant discount.Considering all the oil i use for the race car in one season as well as my 911 with a large Patrick Motorsports front mounted oil cooler , it's worthwhile for me.

Also , i used to use Klotz Tecniplate racing oil in the snowmoblies and dirtbikes but Amsoil satisfies my needs there too as they offer a wide variety of quality products.
Keep in mind , everything is more expensive here in Canada ...

I bought a can just for the transaxles on it, no intension of ever using it. Fwiw I’m happy with Mobil 1 on newer builds and my trusted Brad Penn semi-synthetic on the original builds.
