Noise related to fan/temp controls

I noticed a very short whinning sound inside the cabin of my s2 recently when I turn the ignition key to "on" position (didn't start the car yet)in the morning. Finally, I was be able to recreate the noise by adjusting the temperature knob. The noise seems to come from somewhere behind the steering column and sounds like some sluggish gear/fan was rotating. Does anyone have information about how temperature control works? Or how can I locate the gear that is making the noise? Thanks.
George

I know on my '83 944 even when the fan is at the 0 setting, the fan still spins slowly. Which I think is normal according the manual. Perhaps the fan can be lubed somehow? It's located at the very back of the engine compartment up on top. There will be some sort of wire mesh covering it.
