Anyone else worried about the availability of parts for the 944
 

I acquired an 86 turbo that had an engine fire. It appears to me it might have started while someone was working on it cause the paint on the hood isn’t blistered. The main damage was the engine wire harness and a few other things like the cap to the power steering reservoir is melted a little. Who ever had it in the past took the whole intake and cooling system off. So what I got was the car and boxes of parts. I’ve started going through all the boxes but there is just no way to know if everything is there. I see all these metal cooling tubes that are only for 944’s and started thinking if I’m missing something like this will I be able to find it. I started to look online for an engine wire harness but as you all probably know they aren’t made anymore. Ended up getting one off of eBay that had a few damaged plugs but between the burned harness and the eBay harness I’m able to make one except for the plug the goes to the turbo temp sensor. I have searched all over the internet and can’t find it. Which brings me to my worries. Sense I have no way of knowing if I’m missing any parts in all these boxes I’m afraid to start working on getting this car back together with all the time and money only to find out I’m missing a part that isn’t made anymore. For the people that had to totally rebuild a 944 turbo what was your experience on finding parts. This is the engine bay of my car. And the turbo temp sensor plug that is missing the terminal that I have no idea how to make this work. Just wanted to get y’all’s experiences on if there are extremely or impossible parts to get before I go any farther with this rebuild.

Have you tried phoning Steve at 944online? He's got loads of parts info on the tip of his tongue...and can often find parts that are either unlisted, or "no longer available."

I just finished rebuilding a 951 engine for my 924. thread is on rennlist.
I had to source some pieces that were missing and didn't have any trouble. Almost everything that is not a wear item can be purchased via online vendors, used parts recyclers, and ebay.

Also 1. look up Plyhammer’s Parts. A good guy in my experience.

Also 2. maybe go to Porsche’s corporate website and download (free) the PET, or parts catalog, for your car. It contains drawings and parts numbers for everything in the car.

Also 3. The 951 sub forum here on Pelican has some 951 gurus, as does Rennlist.

I have to say it: that’s a brave-person project.

For the wiring harness, there are two connectors that you cannot buy new.

One is the oil level sensor, the other is that turbo water temperature sensor plug.

...and also our own George Beuselinck (944 ecology). Plus Jason at Paragon products. And a really nice guy in (Georgia?) - cannot remember his name, but his business is called either "Porsch Barn" or "944 Barn."

For more specialized/track related stuff, I think Broadfoot can help out - and Mike at Lindsey Racing can be really helpful sometimes.

And for really first-rate fuel hoses, Len Cummings is your man!

The turbo water temp sensor plug is available at Mercedes (at least for now).

It consists of two parts:

The part number for the Cable Connector: 008 545 20 28 Less that $3.00.
The part number for the Pin Bushing: 009 545 14 28 Less than $2.00


That said a 4 mm banana plug female connector is the same diameter. Get one in black and nobody would know.

With plenty of parts already NLA or becoming NLA, of course theres reason to worry.
However, we can take part is the re-introduction of NLA parts.

Porsche recently re-introduced the early 944/924 Dashes, for example. I spent two years entering the dash part number on a regular basis. I do this regularly for a number of NLA parts.

With the advent of practical 3-d printing, many NLA items can be created. We're in way better shape than a modern car that is packed with custom integrated circuits will be when it is 40 years old. Our cars are pretty simple by comparison.

There are lots of parts available and the amazing company Porsche is supporting older models to a degree that's hard to believe. Why are you worried?

Dc parts, they are a little dodgy, they messed up an order of mine and sent a boogered up part. Okie homey foreign in Oklahoma, they have some 944 parts, and there are other sources. Engine fire? Yikes, I would have said nope. If the wires are melted, you are in for a nightmare scenario, unless you don't mind the work.

Those Mercedes parts for the Turbo TS: One is on clearance here at Pelican, so it may be headed NLA...

I don't mind the work at all. Ive been looking for a project car for a while and I got this real cheap. I already got a engine harness off eBay and have been fixing it up so no worries there. I plan on taking the engine out since its already tore down so much and cleaning up the engine bay to make this thing look like brand new. and while its out new clutch, water pump, seals, rollers and belts.
