My trip to Indy

Wow.
For my Birthday, my precious wife gave me the gift of a lifetime. I went to Indy, yes the Brickyard. I watched the time trials, I felt the time trials. I was stunned at the sheer physical experience that I had while there, I'd reccomend it to everyone even if your not "into" Indy racing. It's just such an experience to be there and see the cars qualify for one of the most prestigious races on this planet. The museum is pretty amazing also, beautiful cars, even a sweet porsche and few nasty indy cars that looked as dangerous as they are fast. One of em had the motor right beside the driver, and it was wide friggin open , tak about scary......I'll never forget it, I atually got choked up when I walked out of the viewing area to look at the track.
I had pit and garage passes also, that is a completely unique experience.
The teams were allowed to run one of three motors in the cars,
1.) Toyota, quiet sort of understated but, very fast.
2.) Honda, Farty, not as quiet or understated, but pretty farty and very fast also.
3.) ahem... CHEVY! LOUD! NOT UNDERSTATED AT ALL, IN FACT PHA-Q IS WHAT THE CHEVY'S WERE SCREAMING AS THEY FLEW BUY EXTREMELY FAST AS THEY SHOOK YOUR INSIDES SO VIOLENTLY IT ALMOST MADE ME WET MY PANTS, OH, AND THEY WERE INCREDIBLY FAST AND ANGRY SOUNDING... my personal favorite..
My experience in 5 words
Surreal, astonishing, magical, terrifying, beautiful.

Frank B

Frank B was in Indy. I'm glad you got to enjoy the track. I cry everytime I here back home again in Indiana. On Wednesday it is community day so anyone that wants to can do two laps on the track. I'm looking forward to it, if a female friend of mine doesn't let me borrow her 944-soon to be mine- I'll take the mom's volvo. I don't think the track is anyplace for a Taurus, especially IMS, it's like sacriligious or something. The Chevy engines suck this year, I'm glad. Going to the track on Thursday for Carb. day, annual skip school tradition. To bad you couldn't have been there for the turbo cars Frank. Glad you enjoyed it.

Glad you enjoyed it

I was there for the last Indy 500 where they were allowed to run Turbo chargers. That was downright amazing. And unforgettable.

My brother was there the week before with all access passes from MS. He got to go in the pits, garages, everywhere. He tried to pay some of the guys $20 to do a lap in his car. Heh..lol.

Glad you had a good time Frank, it's a hell of an experience.

I went to the Museum and visited the track a few years ago. Wonderful place. I don't remember the Porsche in the museum, but then again, I visited before I bought my 944 (and became a diehard Porsche fan), so maybe it was there and I jsut don't remember it. I recall a few old Ferraris which I took pics of. I still haven't been up there for a race yet though. I had a chance to go to the F1 race there a couple years ago, but I had another commitment that weekend unfortunately.

Working on it- it's really rough but mechanically sound. Their is a dent under the left tail light and the front spoiler is pretty trashed. The headlight motor, possibly relay, is fried. It is 1986 black/black/fuchs, n/a of course. It looks like it hasn't been washed in years but with a good scrub, wax, possibly wet sand, some vinyl seat covers from rennbay, a good vacuming and shampooing, an awful coverlay dash cover, and scrape out the tint. Or what i'd really like to do is sand it down, remove all rubber carefully so I don't have to replace ANY of it, take it for a cheap $500 paint job, as close to alpine white as they can get and match the fuchs. Change the belts, clutch is great, lube the cv's, sell the taurus, make some quick cash, have a great daily driver with 6k left in the bank, profit. As you can see I've thought a lot about it. Car has typical N/A shudder, but drives like it should, hasn't been abused mechanically by girl driving it. I hope it works out. I can't shake these cars.

My first house here in San Pedro was near the Los Angeles harbor in a *ahem* rather etnic neighborhood.
When they had the Long Beach grand prix (about ten or fifteen MILES away) I could hear the cars!
