I HAVE A CAM BELT!!?? wtf?

Dist cap off...1.5min
Fuel Rail off...30.min
Air intake hose crumbles off....1.2min
Yes, I'm going out of order.
Front Belt covers off...5 min
Dist. cam cover off...2 min

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!

I still have that beautiful, precious, sublime little cam belt?!

Origionally, when I looked in the Dist "window" the belt was pushed to the rear so all I saw was teeth, vicious, worrisome, glaring teeth...

Here's the thing though, when this first happened I :
1 marked the cam through the window with yellow paint
2 tried to turn the car over (yes overkill that makes 8times)
3 Check the paint and it DID NOT MOVE.

So I conclude: starter turns(from sound) cam no move = bent valves.

HELP
the real equation is

Turn key+hear starter turn+cam no move = ????

So Easy Question:

Why did my 83 944 with 90k turn off and refuse to turn over when cranked.

This was an 85deg day, 3 min from home, car coming to a stop, out of gear, less than 15mph.

Remember, I am pretty sure that the battery is great, full of gas, grounds are good, started definately sounded like it was working, and cam gear seems to not be moving.

Did crank move when you hit starter?

Maybe belt has no teeth at crank.

Why didn't you use a wrench on crank pulley rather than the starter? A starter can bend valves. Next time take plugs out and turn it with a wrench to see if everything turns that needs to turn. If you feel resistance, stop.

Next step remove rotor and rotate cam to see if there is resistance.

I agree w/ Lawrence, the belt's stripped at the crank. Good luck turning it w/ a wrench. You need a socket and ratchet.

Nope guys, belt is intact. Only missing one tooth further down.

guess I will find out when I go to turn the cam at lunch.

If turns ok

Fuel pump relay?? (83 has no dme rel.)

Coil?

F'd up dist cap? (found very, very worn to say the least)

Raging Vacuum leak? (alien hose really bad)

Any bets???

The belt may be intact but it doesn't mean the teeth are, if you're missing one, I've got a feeling that you're missing more than that were it wraps around the crank. That is if the story still stands that you marked the cam sprocket, you turned it over, and it was still lined up perfectly.

Dude, dont about the cam. If your cam was seized it would of shredded the teeth right off your belt. You didnt answer whether the CRANK is turning or not. If it is and your cam is not moving,... i'm with them. Remove your timing belt and check to see if the teether are missing where the belt wrapped around the crank. You didnt find any teeth on your guard thing under your engine (that is if you have one)?

Did the balance shaft belt move?

Do not use starter to turn over. attach socket to crank bolt and turn over w/ratchet.

turn crank by hand and belts do not move possible broken key on crankshaft (not likely) most likely broken teeth on belt at crank.

Snatched from the jaws of death only to be ...?????

Heres the scoop.

Turned Crankshaft with wrench

Rotates easily approx 1/2 turn stopping at tdc by the sprocket marks

Checked tdc in rear window.........nope
Turned Crank while looking in window...no movement
Turned crank while looking at balance/lower sprocket...no move
Notice 5inch section of belt teeth totally missing at bottom sprocket

So..Did timing belt slip at cam sprocket and bend valves?
Did Balance/lower cam sprocket slip and bend valves?
Are my valves definately bent?
Any bets?

Angry

if your engine was running at the time the teeth stripped off, the valves would stop, the pistons would continue and most likely one or 2 of your valves collided with their pistons before the pistons stopped moving. Doesn't sound like any of the valves broke off, but does sound like a couple are bent slightly now.
