Hello. New Member Here

I just took custody of my recently deceased father-in-laws 1983 944. It sat in his garage for a long time doing nothing. His wife's last request was that someone take the car and drive it. Before I drove the 944 back home 180 miles, I had an independent Porsche specialist in San Luis Obispo do a once-over...replacing the timing/balance belts, all front seals, water pump, alternator, electric cooling fan, temp gauge, bleed brakes and fixing a bunch more stuff. It's fun to drive a 5-spd again and it drives WAY better than when I first drove it. I'm fixing a bunch of fiddly things, so I'll be back to ask questions. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650816417.jpg

First and foremost, "Welcome" to Porsche ownership !

Second, nice to hear that you have taken a serious attitude for keeping this beautiful car alive and well.

Third, noticed another Svengoolie fan; cool !

All the best to you. SmileWavy

Condolences. I always liked that color. Glad to hear it's back on the road and putting a smile on someone's face. I like the Svengoolie shirt too.

One suggestion: get a spare DME relay and keep it in the glovebox, or put the new one in and keep the working used one as your emergency spare. There is an aftermarket solid state one for just a few dollars more. It has been out a year or two and I haven't read of any issues with it so that may be an option. That DME relay has left a lot of cars on the side of the road.

Welcome! This is, probably, the best Porsche forum and you'll find a lot of help here.

Your 944 looks to be in amazing shape! Does it have any special options? I would love to see more pictures of the car! Is the interior in as nice of shape as the exterior?

Welcome to the forum. Lots of helpers here.

Car looks great! I suggest that you join the Porsche Club of America... www.pca.org

Thanks for the DME relay suggestion. I’ll order a spare. I just wish the fuse box wasn’t under the dash. I need to be a double jointed monkey to get under there. I’ve made it a point to keep a flashlight in the car just for this kind of work.

I’m not too familiar with all the available options yet, but this car seems to be fairly basic. Sunroof is manual (I’ve already replaced the brackets for sunroof and wind deflector) and it has AC. I wish it had auto door lock. Interior is in very good condition. Dashboard is perfect. Only slight tear in the seat.

After many years of working on early cars with the vw golf fusebox, I discovered a trick to make relay replacement a lot easier. First, move the driver seat all the way to the rear. I bought a largish (6x6 glass) hand mirror and use led shop lights (very bright) to put light on the area. You will still be working backwards, but you have a fighting chance on getting it right the first time.

Also, those fuses can lose their connection over time due to metal fatigue. If you have a chance, twist them while they are still in their holders. Just might save you a failure on the road.

Dielectric grease for relays

Whenever I remove a relay (or fuse or connector or bulb) I smear dielectric grease on the blades or contacts before putting it back. It can make it easier to remove next time as well as reduce corrosion problems. Happy motoring.

Here’s a few photos of my 944. It’s in very nice condition. Aside from the major work I had done by the mechanic to get it road worthy, I’ve done the small nickel & dime repairs: hood/hatch struts, window switches, sunroof latches and a few more.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1650997514.jpg

The Clifford alarm is defunct. I’d like to remove it and all the alarm wires, but I don’t want to mess with it. Maybe the local car radio installer like Al and Ed’s or a real Porsche mechanic?
