cv joints

Now I know why shops charge what they do for CV joint work.

What happens after they make the clinking noise around corners? I want to use the ones I have now for a few more months.

I don't think the have been touched for 17 years. I want to repack them then switch the outer joint to the inside to get a little more use out of them and have them turn the oposite way. Are the joints just switched on the axle or do they have to be swaped to the other side of the car? Thanks.

Not expensive? The cheapest I've found is $215 an axle. It'll needs both axles replaced.

I'm not execting much more life out of them just a few months so I can save up the money.

I have just switched mine around on each side when one side had started to make noise, (the switching the inside to the outside) solved the problem, that was 12,000 miles ago. According to a couple of very knowledgable Porsche guys, that will last atleast another 40,000 miles.

i have rebuilt four 924 and 944 axles, CVs and all.

the first one took me 4 hours (no clue what i was doing). the last one was under an hour.

go to Sears and buy a nice set of snap ring pliers. it will set you back $10 and save you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

it now costs me $20 to rebuild a halfshaft myself. my rebuilt ones last just as long as the new ones. anyone else here can do the same. the haynes manual instructions are very precise.

good luck!

When one of my cv joints started acting up last month I asked around about the best way to fix this either replace the joints or the whole axel. I dont know if anyone has priced a rebuild for an automatic 944 but it's not even reasonable. I picked up 2 cv joint kits for 60 a peice and put it off after hearing horror stories of having to spend a day beating a joint off. I finally drove it down to my brothers shop, removed I think 12 or so bolts holding the axel in and had the whole deal done with in under an hour.

On a car that old, there probably is some grease that has settled into the nooks in the boot. For a temporary fix, try "massaging" the boots to work the remaining moly grease into the joints.

As far as the $215 price tag, that would probably include the price of the axle.

Just an idea, but when you replace the joints, take all the paint off of the axle themselves. Clean them really good, and put Plasti-Dip on them. Plasti-Dip is the stuff you dip tool handles in, and it makes a tough, durable surface that holds up to the occasional rock hitting the axle with out chipping. It comes in black, red, and yellow. Be sure to tape off the splines first!

CV joints on the 944 always require replacement after awhile. Porsche did a pretty stupid thing placing the muffler next to the CV on the drivers side (always goes first). If any of you get EXCELLENCE magazine, a few months ago was a great article on the step by step repair, replacement and restoration of CV joints and axles. They recommended a heat wrap over the exhaust pipe (before the muffler) to cut down heat over the CV area.
Personnally, I hate messing with them! In Atlanta, GA is a shop called "CV SOURCE". They will exchange your complete axle for $100.00 and guarantee it for life! The CV's are all reworked, new axle boot covers, repainted axles, etc. Its very easy to remove and replace axles yourself. Look them up...its worth the price!!! good luck

i did the exhaust wrap thing and my CVs look like new! the boots used to get destroyed but they are fine now.

i use Thermo-tec exhaust wrap, and i have about a mile of it sitting around if anybody wants it for cheap.
