1987 944 with full leather options
About four weeks ago I purchased this '87 944 base with original paint and leather interior. It had a blown engine but the seller is including a mostly complete engine from a '87 924S. It's an automatic car which will be my first 944 with that.

The first challenge was trying to figure out how to pull the engine with the crank shaft seized. One must turn the crank to pull the flex plate bolts. So this meant I had to drop the oil pan and free the crank. So up on the lift, drop the front suspension and steering rack. I suspended the engine with a bar and the dropped the cross member. Once the pan came off, the carnage was evident.
Looks like the cylinder 2 rod bearing seized or spun, wrist pin failed and then it was all over. A rod cap bolt was wedged in cylinder 1 which prevented any crank movement.

I dropped the wasted engine with a come-along and salvaged what parts I could. I'm currently waiting on a rear main seal for the replacement engine. I'm also replacing the flex plate with a manual flywheel, friction and pressure plate. The flex plate was intact but has cracks in the rubber so I'm not chancing failure.
