alignment tool technique
So I've been trying to get the alignment tool to work on my oil cooler housing, and no matter how hard I try I can't get it to line up without some binding.
In fact it binded up at first just trying to screw it through the hole with the housing removed. I got the tool to go most of the way in without binding but right at the end it gets a little harder to turn and it won't go flush with the housing, so it won't go all the way in to the point where the pressure relief valve goes. And then it screws back out without too much trouble. So I installed the prv and it screwed in easily until right at the end it got a little harder to turn and then quickly got a little easier until it sat flush against the housing. I can screw them both in and out with my fingers but at one point almost at the end it gets noticeably more difficult to turn, and I'm sick of taking it out and doing it over and over again. So I guess my question is, what does it mean to bind? Do the tool and valve have to screw in and out absolutely smooth and easy with no resistance whatsoever? I would like to hear everyone elses experience with the tool. |
It should go right in without binding or sticking.
Check the prv bore for obstructions. Inspect the threads of the oil cooler housing for evidence of cross throeading. AFJuvat |
Eli, Out of curiousity what model is the car? Reason is the 944 engine has 2 different tools for the guide. Are you using the 9215 or the 9261/1? Sman

It's a 924S. I've got the right tool.
There doesn't seem to be any thing in the bore and the threads looked alright. When I say it's binding I don't me that I have to turn it with the pipe wrenchor anything. I can screw both the tool and the prv all the way in and out with my fingers. It's just that it's real easy to turn up until the end and then it gets a little bit of resistance. So are you saying AFJuvat, that it should be real easy the whole way in and out? Cause it seemed like I had to wiggle the housing around a little whilst I was tightening the bolts and keep checking the pin to see if the housing was straight or not. |
Eli, I hope I didn't sound as if you don't have the right tool. Was not meant to be questioning your knowledge! But in mid 87 model the 944 engine went with the 3rd PRV and it requires the 9262/1. Just a note for those un aware of this change who are following this post. Hope you were not offended!! Sman

I am sorry I questioned you, it's just that I was searching on rennlist about this and they where going back and forth in one thread about whether he had the right tool or not. Tell me about this tool and how I'm I supposed to know where ro get it or whether I have the right one. Pelican Parts only has 2, the one with threads and one without. |
Eli, Alls cool!!... In the production year July-circa-86 there was an upgrade on the cooler and the seals and the one piece valve came out, not certain on the prv though. My car was a late 86 car and uses the 9262/1 and the early 86 and earlier uses the 9215. PP or Baum Tools has them. Get the production info from your VIN as to when your 87 was built, July or after you may need the 9262/1. I would suspect you have the right one! GL! Sman
