VW Warm Starting Problem

I know this is a 944 forum but my problem is affecting my 944. Its having to be used more. I've got a 88' VW Jetta beater car with a 87 GTI engine in it. When driving around town it will start just fine. After driving on the freeway at about 70mph to 80mph, it won't start. The engine won't even turn over. All the lights come on and I hear the fuel pump running but nothing. I have to turn the key on and off about 25 times to get the engine to turn over and start again. I'm afraid that one these days it won't start on me. The ignition checked out fine. Any ideas as to what this might be? Any help would be appreciated.

Start at your batt. cables and clean the ground, and the main engine grounds. What kind of injection system does it have?

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but you

Okay I tested it by running it on the intetstate and touching the positive to the hot wire on the other side of the solonoid going to the starter and nothing happened. I had the ingition on too. The same click sound and nothing. I had this problem once before and put a ford solonoid on it and that temporarily solved the problem. I'm thinking its the starter maybe. I've got a spare I might try if worse comes to worse. I'm confused.
