1984 944 - Won't start after fuel line change
Hello,
I have a 1984 944 which was running fine. I noticed the fuel tank to fuel pump line was leaking. I had PP send me a new one. Pulled the car into the service area, swapped in the new hose, and started the car. It ran for about 20 - 30 seconds before sputtering out. Now it will not start or give any hint of interest in starting. And the only thing I changed was that 12 inch hose. I checked the lines to the fuel pump to make sure that I did not dislodge anything and looked for other cues without finding anything. I'm thinking my next step is to jump the fuel pump with 12volts to get it running then try again. Just hard to believe that the relay or fuel pump picked this exact moment to die out, so want to be sure that I am not missing anything obvious. Thoughts? Thanks for any insights. |

Well to follow up, for posterity...
Took the end cap off the fuel rail, no gas coming out during cranking. Checked the fuel pump fuse, OK. Replaced the fuel pump relay, no soap (I needed a spare anyway) Detached the new hose from the fuel pump, plenty of fuel coming out of the tank, new hose OK. So it's down to the fuel pump or perhaps something got in the line (??) and plugged the filter. Regardless, accessing the fuel pump and filter from my back while getting doused in gas (again) is more than I am willing to give at this point, I'll ship it off to a garage and let them have the honor of checking and replacing those parts. After putting a new suspension in last weekend, I've given enough. Looks like our session time is up, thanks for listening. |

A DME relay jumper is the obvious test in this situation.
DME Relay Information and Testing Then note if you have tacho bounce. If so, but it still won't start, see if a puff of starting fluid will make it catch.

Your original DME relay may look perfect inside and all solder poins may be nice and shiny, but they may have cracks, which will resist electricity flow. These crack are visible only under a magnifying glass (like jeweler's or watchmaker's).
I replaced my DME relay with a new one. Opened original one and it looked like new inside. When I inspected solder points, some were with very thin cracks. |

Hey all,
Thank you all for the suggestions and ideas. I got a new DME relay from the local dealer and checked the voltage at the fuel pump leads. While cranking I saw 9 v +/-, but the battery was pretty depleted at this point. I put the battery on the charger and got a new fuel pump from our hosts here. Install was magnitudes easier than extraction and it fired right up. So, for whatever reason, cosmic coincidence or something getting in from jostling the fuel tank/strainer, the fuel pump went bad or got clogged. Could be a placebo effect, but after about 20 miles if feels smoother now. Fuel filter and pump to filter fuel line is next. At some point, in no hurry. Cheers |
