951 info

So I am an RS clone owner whose first Porsche was a 1986 951. Black, lipstick red inteeior. Would love to find that car and buy it back. I saw it at Hershey maybe 10 years ago. Sold it to buy the first Boxster delivered in metro DC. Big mistake. Figure it lives in the mid-Atlantic region.

Any how, thinking of selling the clone and going back in time to a 951. Questions

Does anyone have one for sale?
In my ownership, I believe the weak spots to be water pump, timing belt, coolant tank, intercooler seal, A arms. What else do I need to look for when buying used>?

Who is the aftermarket horsepower expert? Would not want a race car, just a fast car. In the day, Autothority did chip work on my car which frankly transformed it.

Last question, am I nuts to sell a perfectly good 69 912 with a really sound 3.2L and 915 for a 951?

Need help

No.

...and please do not take this the wrong way... Your 912 is actually a SWB (and overpowered) 911 with all its inherent handling issues (tail heavy). Having both 912 and 951 (912 coupe being my first Porsche and just leaving the fold on 1 July), a 912 in stock form is a different animal with nearly 50/50 balance and when 'upset', breaks at all four corners into a tolerable/manageable 'drift' away from the apex: it is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. Many people contemplate install a six (insert Type 4, built VW or Suby) in a 912 for more power with the result of being intractable.

BTW, I sold the 912 coupe (owned for 27 years) so that I would focus on my 912 SWT project (not having a 912 to drive being sorely missed)...

...just my 2¢
Peter

thank you for the note. 69 is the first "long wheel base" 911. The car is basically a 911 spec racer under a 69 body. Well done with all '86 suspension components.

Having said that, am in nuts in thinking of changing? Also need to revisit the weak spots to know somewhat of what I am getting into

Yes, I missed that. Still, a stock 912 is a momentum machine that shows no 911-tail-heavy characteristic. If we were talking a stock MY69 (or any MY65-69 for that matter) 912, my answer would be a fervent 'yes'... ...and actually having thought about it again, you may be making a mistake getting rid of an air-cooled Porsche!

I enjoy the 951 for the turbo 'kick in the pants' acceleration and turbo-assisted turning in the twisties; the 912 for the 'full-bore toss it around - no troubles' light and nimble driving!

Good luck with your decision...
Peter

must say right now I would like to have my 951 back. Black, lipstick red interior, Autothority chip, LSD, sport suspension. rocket ship

I sold the car in metro DC and saw it at Hershey some years ago. If someone knows where it is, I would love to find out. Last 3 of the VIN were 944. I added the later model teardrop 911 mirrors

I'd keep the RS, because RS.

I know the attraction to the 951 (my DD is a 951 powered 924), but. . .RS.

Also, RS.
