1985 944 intake manifold removal
Hello everyone.
I just got my first Porsche and it is a 944. I am redoing all the fuel lines to include cleaning and powder coating the intake manifold. It seems to be hanging up in the rear portion. Is there a bolt I need to remove? Thanks, Doug |

Do not powder coat the intake manifold. Powder coating will flake and damage pistons, etc.

There is a bolt on the left/driver side near where the dipstick passes the bottom of the intake manifold.
We saw an awful thread on this forum where IIRC an unfortunate fellow had his intake powder coated and some remaining grit from the bead-blast preparation got into the engine and essentially wiped it out. He was understandably crestfallen that a job meant to add some visual appeal cost him his engine. Best wishes, John

Slim,
Assuming it's the air intake that is hung-up, this picture will help you locate bolt locations. I've seen plenty of powder-coated intakes -- lovely things. Perhaps a guarantee of being 'free and clear of debris' would be in order or taking care of this yourself. ![]() ![]()

Spray-painting your manifold would be another very safe option. Here is mine after painting, with the gold painted water pipe laying across the top:

I think this is a great example of the old maxim that just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Any process that could risk getting blasting media into an engine is bad judgment to my way of thinking. It’s a bit of a grumpy old man thing to say/write, but if it could save an engine or two, then my work will be done.
