good deal on 944 NA
I just drove a 1984 944 NA at a finance co that was repoed. Its Black ext, with brown/tan int. 124k miles with Very good ext and very good int. The dash is cracked ,but thats it. AC, 5speed, fact alarm, sunroof, has the original window sticker and owners manual. It has a set of Porsche 993 turbo style wheels, good rubber up front, needs rear tires. Runs out well, runs cool, good oil pressure. Could use a tune up, Idles at 1200 rpm, a bit high but pretty smooth, engine pulls well, but not as smooth as it could be. I'd buy this myself but I like my 924 and dont want to sell it right now.
Its in Greenville NC, 1.5 hours east of Raleigh. They will take $4400 for it, maybe less. Its a worth it. Shoot, it has $2000 in wheels. Call American General Financial 252-756-3837 ask for Duane Pittman. |

I'm washing my car, replacing a few things (headlight switch, wiper blades, etc.) on mine, and it shall go on sale by friday.
I'll literally take anything over $3k for it. (Parents want me to get rid of the car, really bad). I have all records since new, including modification receipts, over $8k in the last 2 years. Car's in Raleigh NC. If you're interested, I can be reached at tazdevil82@aol.com. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

Too much for that car. Heck, 1983 1984 944's are going for $3000 - $3800. The key here is always consider a 1985.5, Phase II first if you can afford a few more dollars. Big differences in the 1983, 84 and 85 model. Do not be in a rush to jump in after all if you cannot make your own repairs do not expect Pep Boys or Midas to change a clutch, install a water pump, replace timing and balance belts, etc. These cars can be very expensive for repairs and the older models are more prone repair. If you really consider this then have it checked out by a Porsche mechanic for the $100 investment. At that mileage anything can be wrong (steering rack, power steering pump and hydraulic lines, torque tube, wheel bearings, and on it goes. We wise and have it looked at thoroughly, the price is no bargain...

Now I know I've owned one, and that mine's for sale, but I can't really suggest a later model 944 for anybody who's concerned with reliability...
The early cars are harder to find in good shape, BUT almost ALL parts are cheaper!!! They're easier to get, usually easier to work on. The early cars are also lighter. I'm planning to buy a 968 next year, but even then, my "beater" Porsche is probably going to be another early 944, if I don't get caught in a replica 550 spyder, or something quite similar. I like the early dash pretty good as well, which a lot of people don't, that's totally fine by me, it's preferance, but as far as maintenanace costs go, early cars are no worse, and usually much better than later ones... actually, according to the
porsche 944 faq the early the 944's weigh a bit more than the post-85.5 944's. and the early dash really looks vw rabbit to me. |

That's quite interesting, I know that the early transaxles weigh less, there are less available options on an early car, the oil pan weighs more on the later cars as well. There's even less insulation, what gives?
Though it looks pretty complete, can somebody dig out owners manuals from a late/early car? I'll do this for my own car when I pay a visit to it. It'll be before saturday it seems. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

I have found that generally the 3K 944's are the mechanics specials. A really nice example of an early 944 can run anywhere from 4K to 6K

So Hoff, I need to sell this car, what do I do? I know of 2 OTHER people with 944s (one early, the other late), the same with them. People don't even call to find out about the car, which is sad.
A car is worth how much somebody is willing to pay for it. I'd (and I DID) pay $6k for mine easy, (that was the purchase price, don't forget all the mods!) but my parents want me to sell it, and it doesn't make sense to keep the car when I don't have a place to store it, or a license to drive it! You tell me, what am I to do, any suggestions? I'm going to consider parting this thing if I can't find a buyer soon... Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

best thing about the early 924-style dash is that you can rotate your tach so that peak HP, or redline, is at the 12-oclock position. you can also put the crappy VDO odometer/speedometer off to the side.
i've talked to a LOT of 944 turbo race car drivers and they all say that they like the early round gauges better. many of them bought aftermarket tachs so that they would be front-and-center rather than in the peripheral vision. obin |
