Poor Hot Starting

Well when I first start the car it runs good but rich. The fuel mixture leans out a little but still rich. Car runs OK. Upon restarting the car goes rich and idle's poorly. Its missing and I can hear a slight poping at the exhaust. If the car sits over night it starts fine.

Roger,

The popping in the exhaust is un-burned fuel finally igniting in the wrong place. You could hook-up a spark plug @ the pipe and make a cool flame but you need to find the prob before having to replace the exhaust or worse.

A vehicle in dire need of a tune up will exhibit the same condition. Check your plugs, wires, cap & rotor. and coil. Also ensure the air filter is clean. That you live in fl like me dielectric grease is your'e friend and use it on every connection there is,re: plug wires and coil wires both ends, every electrical plug in the engine compartment.

I would recommend replacing your plugs with the bosch platinum, will save you gapping and cleaning and at the same time replace the old coil as the capacitance has probably dropped significantly.

Roger,

Sorry, forgot that it only happens when up to temp. You have a leaking vac. line somplace.

Use the todwic bernz-o-matic method to find if vac is the culprit.

start vehicle and allow to come to temp and start missing etc.. then take the unlighted torch w/ valve open and move around the vac lines when you hear the idle change you got it.

Rick, your idea sounds good I haven’t heard of that but can you explain how it works a little more. I have been trying to locate an idle problem.

Start the car and allow to come up to temperature till it starts running poorly.

Take a standard bern-zo-matic torch or similar with the standard
nozzle attached.

Use the torch as wand "NOT LIGHTED" and and pass it around all vac. connections and intake where mounted to head. If a vacuum leak is present the idle will increase dramatically. The reason is, you are entering a flammable gas into the airflow which burns more efficiently than petrol hence the increase in rpm's.

Make sure you disconnect the O2 sensor so the DME doesn't try to compensate the idle.

Roger,

Poor hot starting with a CIS can be either accumulator or fuel pump check valve. Since it starts good cold, I'd say it is probably the accumulator. You can check it by taking the screw out of the bottom & see if gas comes out. If so, it's bad.
