Hmm,...

First, this is about the toyota. I know this is not a porsche question. The dealer from which I bought the truck said that Toyota specifies that I need to change the oil every 5000 miles NOT every 3000. What is this all about? Should I listen to them or do it every 3000 miles like everyone else? Also, I have been thinking,... I think I am going to save up a good 2000 - 2500 and pick up a 951 project car. You know, one that spun a bearing or something, as long as it wasn't hit and it's in decent condition. I figured I would buy a project car so I can strip the shizz out of it and clean and replace parts as needed until I have my beast in perfect condition. I won't be driving it until it's down therefore wont need insurance on it. I would do some work on it here and there while attending school. What you guyz think? What does a 951 project car run about, 2000 - 2500 about right??

a (mechanical) project car can be had for about 4-5k but the problem is that you'll be spending a hell of a lot to get it back into shape. Better off buying one that runs solidly and take it from there.

Really? Damn there this guy selling a 951 for about 2,500 with a good engine and everything. Never been hit. He stripped the shizz out of the paint and was going to repaint it. He was also doing something with the body panels. Makes me wonder why hes selling for so cheap? My friend said he was going to get pictures and more info from him. As for buying a project car, if I do get it, it's going to be a slow progressive project. Dont really care about the money. It will keep me busy when I have nothing to do and plus like I said the first time I might just feel bad for tearing apart a perfectly ok engine. If the engine is so so and the car is ehhh then thats another story. As long as it hasn't been hit and the engine isn't putty inside.

Overkill.. Sounds to me like another project car is what you need.. Go for it.. You know what to look for now..Right?

As for the Toyota. I had a Corolla that ran 286, 000. miles before it blew a head gasket. Toyotas can be treated badly and still keep going.

Well, if the engine is in good shape it's worth at least that so if you trust it, go for it!

Well, I'll have to see. I really wouldn't mind but I just bought this truck of mine and therefore I am broke. I am pretty sure I could get the money up fast if I had to but I think I might just pass it up seeing that I really would to go to school as fast as possible. Need to get out of moms house

O'kill,

Sounds like a fun project but as you say, ya need ta get outta there and get your butt ta school. The sweetest deals will always drop in your lap when you are not looking for them or right after you think you got a sweet deal. So, wait and get your future aligned and then wait for the one you can't pass up you never know it may even be something you never expected to happen in your lifetime.

Rick

I'm guessing the dealer is referring to oil in a new toyota and a special blend of oils that is used to break in those engines. New cars typically have a "break in" oil that is supposed to remain in the enigne for the first 5,000 miles to penetrate engine oil seals and make them ready to last a long long time. After the 5,000 mile break-in period most recommend to go to full synthetics for the rest of the life of the engine. Oil change intervals are really determined by how hard the engine is worked. Towing required more frequent changes, towing in the desert even more frequent, maybe as low as every 1,000 miles in that situation. Most normal driving 5,000 is fine, synthetics even 10,000 might be ok, especially if there is alot of easy highway miles.

Ok, I'll do it every 4,000 seeing that I am not doing any real towing or hard driving. I have to constantly remind myself,..."It's not a Porsche. It's not a Porsche. It's not a Porsche,... slow down." Argh, it's driving me nuts but it's ok at the same time. One good thing about this truck,... it's super easy to drift!!!! I learned that my first night in the rain!!! Thanks to it's 90/10 weight ratio, LOL!!! I'm gonna be a man and pass up the porsche offer. Going to use the money to pay bills and go back to school.

It's a Toyota, it doesn't matter if you change the oil or not.

Buy it. Your Toyota is very nice and reliable, not much you can play with or fix there, because it's in nice shape. buy the 951, you wanted one anyway right?......

Overkill. I'm sitting here in my shop... you know the Toyo shop. Yes, you can abuse most toyotas and they'll hold together, but if you want your truck to really last, do the 3000. Unless you're running mobil 1 synthetic.
It's just not a good idea to beat the heck out of the truck engines. I've seen them blow pretty early on due to lack of maintenance.
Be good to your car and it will treat you accordingly.

Cool!!! Thanks interglossa!!! I'll do the 4000 miles using Mobil1 Syn. I am racking up alot of miles quick so the extra 1000 miles will save me a bit of money. I don't want to go any longer than 4000 though. When I change out the eginge oil, I want to change the tranny and axle oil too. Hey, the axle pumkin thiing has it's own oil right?

FrankB,... yes I want a 951(REALLY BAD) but I am going to pass this one up. You never know what I might get down the road. While in school, pretty all my debt will be repaid. I will be able to do anything and when schools over,............ AWWW YEA!!!! I be working for parts

I'm assuming the truck is a 4X4? You should replace the gear oil (if manual) and the front transfer case oil with 75W90 every 30,000 or so and the rear axle oil should be 80W90, same interval.
