Depite the perception I am anti-jap I actually kinda feel bad for those guys.

Beautiful example of what a missed shift can do.

What a mess. I don't think I would have gone through the trouble of dropping the engine with a body thats in that bad of shape. Maybe time for a new car at that point, "know when to fold 'em."

But I did find the rest of the forum entertaining as well, there is a guy that has unpainted "aero effects" on his car, in his signiture line! Very funny!

Wonder if this is covered under the factory warranty (hee hee)

That really does suck.

That's what I was thinking.:D

I think it's kind of funny.

MrPants 06-05-2003 01:31 PM

well all he needs is a new: block, crank, rods, pistons, valve train, head, gaskets, seals, oil pan, pump, and prolly a few other things, right?
this actually kinda scary is that what blown engines normally look like or does acura just make a fragile engine?
that also makes me glad that our shift pattern is so gigantic its hard to miss gears (although i have)

overkill 06-06-2003 02:51 PM

What is a missed shift? What the hell did he do to that car? I have never seen anything like that before!!!

MrPants 06-06-2003 07:49 PM

according to the story he put it in second instead of fourth.
i wonder if they dont come with a rev limiter or if he just disabled it

phantom309 06-06-2003 08:38 PM

I understand this is easy to do with a six-speed. He was going fast enough so shifting to second just dragged the motor past the rev limiter. Boom.

Honda builds wonderful engines - but you can only idiot-proof these things so much....

coupe 06-06-2003 10:09 PM

Can the owner say these words. "NEW ENGINE".....That is unbelievable.

Its beyond me, how any experienced driver can shift into 2nd gear from 5th. He should stick with automatic gear boxes, they are idiot proof.

ronin 06-07-2003 12:35 AM

Oh God, pleeease please please don't ever let me screw up like that!! I promise to pay attention to what the hell I'm doing. Next to an engine fire, that would be my worst nightmare.

overkill 06-07-2003 03:14 AM

Yo, the picture with the hand holding the nugget looking things,... is that what he said used to be pistons or is he talking about the pictur of the open crank case? If not then what the hell are the nuggets? GOD, this kids engine looks spooky!!! The pictures make steel and aluminum look like clay. Everything all deformed, mashed, flattened, streched, cut, bent, rounded,... you know what I mean. Weird.

ronin 06-07-2003 09:07 AM

This does lead me to ask how delicate this engine really is. Of course any engine could suffer serious damage when overrevved for any amount of time but to go into total meltdown like this??...

I guess it all depends on how long the engine was being overrevved before it finally let go.

Moneyguy1 06-07-2003 10:55 AM

Sad.

But, Did I spy a balance shaft with a ROLLER CHAIN in that mess? Not being that familiar with Honda engine innards, I wondered if that is the case, how come.......

Never mind.....

Scott R 06-07-2003 11:35 AM

Quite a few cars have had balance shafts, Neon's do. I just did a head gasket on a few weeks back and had to lign it back up.

Bob's944 06-07-2003 11:53 AM

Says he was doing 7,000 RPM in 5th gear (redline is at 7,900) and PURPOSELY DOWNSHIFTED..... even if he was trying to hit fourth that was probably more than fourth could have taken anyway. So lets do alittle guessing (I don't know speed in gears numbers) ... top speed in 6th up near 150, I'm guessing 5th would be good for 135? that would put 7,000 rpm in 5th say 120 mph... 2nd gear on that car is good for what? maybe 60 to make the numbers easy...... that would mean that when he released that clutch when downshifting into 2nd from 5th gear at 7,000 rpm, he was doing 120 mph, two times the speed in gear at redline for that gear. 7,900 x 2 is how fast that engine spun temporarily, till it blew up and melted. That's 15,800 rpm. Formula 1 engines can turn that fast, not much else.

Downshifting when you're high up on the revs to the next lower gear.... stupid

Downshifting to 2nd from 5th.... i think catastrophic describes that damage.

Moneyguy1 06-07-2003 12:31 PM

Balance shafts, yes..anything in the 2.4+ liter category. But, Why a roller chain drive on a humble Honda while we are saddled with a fibre belt is the question. I thought Hondas were inferior....<G>

Frank B 06-08-2003 04:34 PM

another doofus that can't drive. Well, I'm glad mommy and daddy can overcompensate for their lack of parental involvement in his life, and have the cashola to buy his attention.

CJFusco 06-08-2003 05:00 PM

too bad they can't buy him a friggin clue

Frank B 06-08-2003 05:04 PM

good one!!.. or buy him a girlfriend, that'd give a clue about what to do with his nice car. Well, more specifically what to do with the back seat of his Car anyway.
