early 85 944 side mirror replacement

I assume this must be a common issue because BOTH of my side mirrors fell out and smashed. I bought the car with just rubber backer pads. the rest looks fine.

is there a heat element involved? when I went to order them there seemed ot be options for heated mirrors and I though maybe there is some sort of heat element in behind the rubber or maybe some mirrors have heating elements ?

is there a recommended glue? the "Burco" replacements came with sort of a double stick tape but maybe I can use something better. the installation sheet suggested using both the double sided tape stuff and also a glue in the other areas. I have some sealant but I don't think it's really good at bonding. I thought maybe others have ideas.

The mirror glass is mounted to the rubber and the there is a heating element embedded into the back. The complete mirror assembly has three snaps that attach to a metal plate. If you go onto ebay you can find some good pictures of mirrors in various states of disassembly. Good luck.

I guess if the heat element is in behind the rubber pad then all i need to do is worry about the mirror. I was wondering if some mirrors had the heat element combined into the mirror itself, similar to a rear defroster.

looking through ebay pics and such , it seems the rubber pad has a connector on the back.

If the heat element is in the rubber pad which I'm assuming is the case, then I suppose any glue or the two sided sticky pad may work as an insulator and reduce the effect of the heater. perhaps some glues will conduct better, Silicone might be a pretty good insulator.

I didn't get to see what was there originally I just have rubber pads there but I guess no wire connections either.
no point taking the rest of the mirror apart, I assume.
