<944> VW Lock Cylinders to Rekey Car?

Gruppe:

The lock cylinders on my car are mismatched and I was wondering if the VW cylinders would work. I was told by the Porsche dealer parts guy that they were the same. Porsche wants $800 for a set of matched locks! The VW online sources have it at $10/lock!

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

Doesn't take much to have a locksmith redo all the locks. Choose the one you want to match to, usually the ignition, remove the other locks and take them to a licksmith. I did a number of years ago for a 924, watched the guy carefully and learned how it was done...relatively simple, I think it cost me about $25 for both doors and the rear lock. When I got my 944, one of the locks actually had a broken screwdriver blade in the passenger door lock!! I removed them and within an hour had all the locks the same. Just remember when you remove the tumblers, make certain there is a key inserted. Otherwise you will be "surprised" by little parts and springs flying in all directions.

Bob:

I got a quote of $55/cylinder from the locksmith I called (recommended by the Porsche dealer) and of $5/tumbler (don't know how many I'll need to get all the locks to match up) at the VW dealer. I think I'll go the latter route. VW says they can do all locks, including glove box.

I'll keep the Forum apprised of what happens.
