engine cuts out at 1500 RPM

Hi I have a 86 951 it has been running great until today now it will only run up to 1500 RPM then the engine cuts out, so i can drive it in any gear till 1500 RPM then the ignition seems to cut out any Ideas?
It has new plugs, wires, cap, rotor,it has never given any hint of bad running till today.
So I am thinking engine speed sensor?
Fuel control /DME relay?
Any one ever have this problem? Thanks , Stan

Hi, Thanks FR, I can hear the click it makes when opening the throttle from just off idle, but if i open the throttle to make more than 1500 RPMs the engine dies.......Stan

They can click and still be bad. Try and unplug the connector to the TPS. If the problem goes away, then the TPS is bad. With the TPS disconnected, your idle will vary quit a bit. I would also not recommend running hard with the TPS diconnected since the DME will never get a full throttle signal.

Haa Haa Haa, with all of this electrical stuff.
FR Wilk you da man!
I went out to check on things after the engine cooled down, and guess what, the TPS would not make a clicking noise when the throttle was opened from off of Idle, things that make you go Humm.....
So I went to my parts car and removed the TPS and installed it on my car and now all is well.
Hey thanks for the great info it saved me a lot of hassles...Stan

Sorry about that, I hit the wrong button. I have the exact same problem. Now I just need $60 to fix it. The only thing that sucks is you have to remove all the plumbing to get to the bottom screw on the TPS.

Hi I removed the left side intercooler tube as you are looking at the engine, and the top of the air cleaner box, then it was pretty easy to get to the screw, remove it then slide off the TPS and slide on the new one,Stan

I had the same problem, replaced the bad TPS - Great - Hunky Dory. Six months later it happened again. I unplugged it and have been driving for two months without it plugged in.
