I am havning problems with the removal of the sunroof. I followed the instructions on the removal procedure and it doesn't work. It goes up and down but when down and the key in the off position I get nothing...any suggestions?

I had the same problem with my 1984 944. I pulled off that "triangle" cover in the front middle and jiggled the switches and wires. There was nothing obvously wrong. Put it back and now it works fine. It might be that the microswitches aren't calibrated and/or dirty, so the car "thinks" the sunroof isn't all the way retracted. If so, it won't release the latches for complete removal. If you have an 83-85, just putting the key in the ignition is "position 1", and then you should be able to disengage the latches. 85.5+, you need to turn the key to detent 1, then you can remove it. Good luck.

if u are the early type 944 i.e. 1983 as mine is then u have one micro switch in the middle at the front of the sunroof.
it is fitted to the roof of the car and the middle triangular metal thing on the sunroof touches this micro switch to tell the car that the sunroof is closed, and this is when the second circuit comes to life to disengage the rear catches of the sunroof.i had the same problem a few months back and drew gave agood answer which is in the archives.you can also go to the boot and pull back the trim to expose the sunroof motor and two relays and by removing the covers of both relays (careful)u can then activate the sunroof by closing the points with youre finger, this will then prove that it is the microswitch, if youre car is newer then it has more micro switches at the front and i cann`t helo
good luck

My 88 micros are out of whack as well. When I replaced the stripped gears, I dicked with the micros in the back, and now with the ignition on it goes up about 1.5-2"". But I have to manually let go of the switch to close the roof in the locked position, otherwise the arms retrack completely (for sunroof removal).

I know my arms are out of place, as the roof should rise higher than 2", but if I set them so that the arms stop at the locked position, rather than fully retracked, I won't be able to remove the roof, since the ignition 1 position doesn't do anything for me. I'll check the center visor micro, the next time I remove my roof.

I guess I've bypassed all that German clock maker ingenuity that is supposed to prevent you from removing the roof while the vehicle is moving. Like I'd try it in the first place.

thanks for the suggestion guys but when I looked at the motor in the back it has been customized or something(just to make it work)...obviously there has been trouble before with the roof. I'm going to have to look into the situation more and hopefully I'll be able to sort it out.

thanks

I too am having the same problem with my 87 on removal. I retimed the roof according to a great tech article I found here. I had to remove the arms, run the motor to the first micro switch, counted teeth. I then took out the arms, set the roof down and put the arms at the start of the "knee" in the track. Connected everything up and the roof works great but indent 1, I can't release it. The center micro is butt spliced together because it was giving trouble. The motor, cams, micros are ok in the back. Relay? Other micro somewhere? Sunroof switch? Ignition? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.....
