Passenger window only works from passenger side
Hi all!
New to 944 ownership - my 1988 944s's passenger window only seems to operate from the passenger side switch. When pressing up on the driver's side switch, I can hear something trigger, but the window doesn't move up or down. Any clues here? ALSO is it possible to replace the bulbs in the sunroof / lock / mirror switches? |

...and does that window move up more slowly than the driver's window? (I'll get back to that later).
It seems about every six months or so, my (driver's side mounted) passenger window switch needs to be removed, sprung apart, and contacts cleaned with a bit of emory cloth followed by a shot of electrical-cleaner spray. Not a difficult process but a bit fiddly to line up the internals of the switch prior to re-installation. But my sense is that the larger issue (at least in my case), which has been causing the contacts on that switch to become visibly burnt over time...is that the passenger window is sluggish - telling me that maybe its placing too great a strain on the circuit, and the switch which is used most for that window - the drivers side mounted one, is taking the brunt of that strain. Make sense? At any rate...maybe someday I'll get off of my lazy-bones butt and address (what I think is) the actual issue! |

OK-944:
So, would that suggest that the window regulator(s), should be (at the least) lubricated? Gears, sliding rails and rollers? Perhaps, that needs to be done periodically. Every couple of years? My pass window switch on driver's side stopped operating couple of months ago. Quick cleaning and lubricating fixed that. Also, the rubber guides inside door cavity, may add more friction (dirt and whatnot). Safeing: Bulbs? possibly. I've never done that. Remember, if you try to disassemble those switches, their plastic is brittle and may crack. Some heat plastic parts with stolen wife's fan prior to disassembly. The 944 window switches are an exercise in frustration. Before doing anything major, like window regulators, go the easy route and start replacing the switches. There is a great YouTube video on problematic windows, and it shows how the problem can be either the passenger switch or the drivers side switch (for the passenger side). They are interconnected. Pelican sell’s replacement switches. Start with one, but I guarantee you, at least two will need replacing. The switches pop out of the door panel pretty easily, but it’s a fiddly job to get them back in. A tiny blade screwdriver is needed to press the clips back into the door panel.

I had a sluggish one on my volvo. took it apart to find that what happened was the magnets in the motor became detached from the case.
then they stick to the armature itself, there should be clearance. funny thing is the motor still works but runs slow, why , because the armature and the magnet are now stuck together by magnetism. the armature is magnetic. both parts were polished from rubbing. even though the magnet comes loose it is still retained from turning so they are then scrubbing against each other. solution was easy, clean everything and use JB weld to stick the magnet back to the outside of the case as it should be. if the window track is sticky you cna try silicone spray, keep in mind silicone is a problem for repainting. sometimes Ill put some on the door frame where the rubber is , just so my doors dont get frozen shut in winter. Id jump the switch to test and check it with a meter , If it still moves slow than you need to get all inside the panel to get the motor out. mine was full of rust from a bad wiper seal. I greased it up and its been ok since. I've seen the exact same happen with wiper motors and fixed them the same way. a motor with this rubbing issue will move slow, draw lots of amps maybe blow the switch but remarkably it still runs ! porsche might use a different motor, I bet it's very similar though. If you are all into the door for some other reason I;d pull the motor apart , lube inspect it. Id like to change the outer wiper seals on my 944 for this reason, they go hard, then water runs in, to get them out you need to remove the whole window, frame etc... probably wise to do both together.. if that rubber goes rock hard and you put your arm out the window it can be annoying. scratches your arm then. I scrapped a volvo 740 , took them out and saved them. I wonder if they are the same motor ? on those , most are 4 door so the simple solution is to borrow the switch from a back seat, I never really use the back seat for people and I can move them from the drivers seat. best to have them all working , of course. It could be a safety issue.. but you can probably swap them around.. Last edited by Monkey Wrench; 09-25-2023 at 09:58 AM.. |
