chevy pistons in 944
This is only a thought and I want to know if somebody already did it.
Other member suggest in other post and sounds (to me) posible. 944 2.5 100 pistons into early 928 block ? I don`t need to rebuild my 944 engine (fortunately is great) but can be a good idea to increase the displacement let me know your opinion |

If u wanna put chevy parts in your car do the LT1 conversion. I was thinking about doing it instead of getting a 951. It costs around 5k to do it right and maybe 1k more just incase.

I think the 4.00" std SBC Piston is about 101.6 mm. Isn't 1 mm the max recommended overbore? If so this is oversize. This would increase the displacement probably about 6 or 7 cc. The 3.0 crank & pistons from a 968 might be the way to go if that would fit. I know some folks get 2.8 l from a 944 & 951 with a stroker crank. I think that maybe an 89 944 was a 2.7 l.
One thing to consider about switching to pistons not made for a 944 is the piston alloy. With the wrong alloy they could gall & seize like the trans plugs without coating. I know some old small engines that had chromed pistons to run in the aluminum cylinders. I don't know if the 944 & the old Vega pistons (Silicon Aluminun block like 944) are a special alloy or have some special coating or not. One way to make sure is to run steel sleeves in the cylinders. The good thing about Chevy pistons is that some people like JE & Wiseco make some lightweight, durable pistons. drew1 |
