Carpet Dye

I was thinking of dying the carpet in the rear hatch area. It was originally a shade of brown, but now it has faded to a light green/grey color. If I buy a new mat, the wheel wells will still be the faded color. Has anyone ever dyed the carpet? Any success?
Thanx

whatever you do, don't use carpet spray paint to dye it! the PO of my car did it to the linen carpet and it was nasty....the old carpet was so brittle if you scratched it, it would fall apart in your hands............needless to say i recarpeted the entire car.

I think there is a rayco within an hour of my house. Is the price reasonable? Thanx for the info on the spray dye, it seemed to good to be true for a quick fix.

My previous house had peach carpet when I first looked at it. Hated it so much I hardly considered the house. None of the other houses I looked at were as nice as that peach carpet one, so I bought it after talking to a carpet dye guy. The peach carpet was dyed brown, stayed in the same color family, and I loved the house. Moved from the house after almost 8 years, the carpet color was holding up just fine. Resistance to fade seemed to be pretty good.

Still, keep the car outta the sun... it's your enemy

I have heard that you can simply buy the RIT fabric dye from the grocery store and apply it with a spray bottle. I dont like the sound of this idea so I bought a rear floor mat from Performance Products. Its very nice even quieted the car a little. I think it was like $100 though but it made a huge diffeence in the appearance.

I used RIT dye from a spray bottle to dye the brown carpet in my '84 and the black carpet in my '87.

Works fine for me.

Did it look good when you were done using the RIT dye? I am hoping to get it looking close to original.

An empty old windex bottle should do fine. Out come is up to you start light and in an inconspicious area.

They have really improved the spray carpet dye/paint in the last few years. I got some at the local auto parts store to spray the faded black carpet on the backs of the rear seats on my 911. Went on well. Was a bit stiff when it dried, but after I vacummed you could hardly feel any stiffness at all. After I was done it was not as brilliant a black as the rest of the carpet, but was 100% better than the old faded color of grey/green. Also has held up well over time (around 8 months) and weekly vacumming.
