Where to buy 944 go-fast parts ?!

Hi,

I just picked up an '86 porsche 944 n/a for track use. I have following mods in mind, can someone tell me where to buy these at decent prices ?

- Bursch headers
- B&B exhaust
- Weltmeister chip
- cone filter (not a drop in filter)
- Koni or Bilstein shocks
- Springs (Eibach and H&R don't carry springs for 944)
- Big brake kit (preferrably Brembo)
A few questions too:

1. Will the Volk Racing TE-37s fit these cars
2. Does anyone know what MSDS is ?
3. Will the turbo counter part brakes fit on this car ?

Thanks for your input.

Russell.

http://www.********.com sells the Autothority stage II chips for $400, which is the lowest price I've seen for them new. Once in a while, a set will come up on eBay that usually sells for around $250.
http://www.*****************.com is a good place for suspension parts (Koni shocks, torsion bars, Turbo Cup sway bars, etc.). If you want Bilsteins, try http://www.shox.com -- they have road race coil-overs for the 944 Turbo, but I don't know if they will fit a 944na.
Europroducts usually has a cone filter up for sale on eBay (they sell the ones made by MSDS -- MSDS makes "performance" intakes for various cars, by the way) with a reserve price of around $100, but there's usually a decent supply of used ones for $50 or $60 around if you look hard enough. Check the Rennlist classifieds for all the stuff you want. Turbo brakes will not fit unless you also get Turbo spindles (the mounting bolt spacing is different). I bought my B&B exhaust from Performance Products, but B&B isn't the only game in town. A lot of people say that Borla's cat-back works well for the 944na (not very well on a Turbo, though) and costs a bit less than the B&B.

Sell it and buy a 951 and save yourself a lot of time and money. I found an 86 951 for less than $4000. I used to have a 944S that I had just about all of your wished for parts and then some and yeah it cornered well and was a good autocross car, but in a straight line it was embarassing. BTW the S lost the #2 rod bearing around a corner because it cornered to hard - hows that for a slap in the face. Take it from someone who has been down the same road...don't blow your wad on the wrong *itch.

951's also have the same #2 rod bearing problem. Overfill the crankcase a little when using it on the track.

The turbo counterpart is a brembo....but they are right(no offense) sell it and get a 951(with all the money and upgrade ur putting into)951 is already that unless u take it to the next level)...volk racing te-37 won't fit unless u modify(or if they make one for 944) the holes and add spacers....for all the parts that ur looking for i suggest u get an excellence magazine(places/parts ur looking for)....my 0.02 cents.....

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the feedback. As for buying a 951 instead, I purposely didn't buy it. Here's why:

1. Its more expensive, I paid $2500/- for my n/a with 90k miles on it. I bought it from the original female owner and is in excellent condition. Turbos around here in CA go for at least 8k or 9k.

2. For track use, you want something more reliable, most force induction cars are pushing the engine to its limits. For autox this is usually not that big a deal as each run lasts about 20 mins or so. For full on enduro race the car has to spend over 1 hour at or around redline. N/A will be more suitable for this if certain things are taken care of.

3.You don't need a fast car to have fun, you race with similar displacement cars. Usually 944 n/a is placed against 13b RX7, miata etc.

4. N/A is pretty nimble once all the interior comes out, power steering is deleted, a/c is thrown out

5. If I want to run with the fast cars I can always use my NSX. Though after seeing some nice cars crunched up I don't want to run the NSX. 944s have good handling and enough power to have fun...that's the whole point. Someday when I have a lot of money and I can buy a Viper GTS-R, I'll sell my 944

Thanks again for all your feedback. I hope to learn from you guys about this car as I've never owned a Porsche before.

BTW, I almost had bought a 2nd gen RX7 turbo for about the same price but I didn't because it was a turbo.

Later dudes.

Its not a measly 8k-10k when I have to justify owning three cars being single and living in an apartment Though with the insurance I'm paying on these cars I can probably afford a small house in california

Besides, like I said I don't want a turbo

Does anyone know of an inexpensive but a good porsche shop in the bay area or los angeles ?

Thanks again for all the help guys.

uh oh...another honda guy...lol. I see why you didn't get a 951 - you didn't want to have a quicker car for less money than the NSX! Just kidding...seriously though check Paragon Products...they have great products, pricing and support. Also buy excellence as was mentioned above.

P.S.

Don't waste your money on a B+B unless you can pick one up used. On this car I doubt whether the expense would be worth it. First concentrate on the suspension as this will make the most difference on an N/A. For brakes, go to realride racing's site and take some of their advice - don't waste your money again. Good luck in your racing and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me.

Thanks! Actually I was buying this car sight unseen and my friend was supposed to close the deal for me in los angeles but the guy selling the car is now flaking out, he wouldn't let my friend come and pick it up. He keeps saying its his moms car and she is having second thoughts about selling it...go figure.

Anyway, so now I kind of feel shot down. I had my heart set on it.

What is the general consensus on the Porsche 928, they are about the same price as the 944s more or less ?!

Thanks again for all the help guys.

Russell.

Well, maybe the older 928's are in the same price range as a 944, but if you're going to get one you should go for a later 928 S4 or GT(S), which will cost you considerably more than a 944.
