safe bet?
hi im considering buying this guy's used tranny from a 1986 944na to put in my 1987 944na.
I emailed him and his response is attached here. My question is: WHAT are the chances that this tranny is in good working order based on how its been stored? will it fit my car? how many miles should a tranny last that has been driven nicely? Would you go for this one or a rebuild of your own tranny? Here is his response: Howdy, here is the deal. I bought the car years ago for the nose, I had bought a 1988 with 41k miles that had a light hit on the right front corner. When I got the 88 back I found that the parts were outrageous to say the least. So that is how I got the 86, I bought it for parts. I took the nose and fixed the 88 and the 86 sat inside the storage building out of the elements because it had a mint black leather interior, for years and years till I finally took it all part about 2 years ago and got rid of the shell. When I got the 86 parts car it was hit down the left side, the drivers door and the left rear quarter was damaged. I drove the car my self from the building that It got delivered to over to the storage building about 5 miles away, where it met it's demise. That was in about 1992 and from what I can recall the trans felt fine and shifted good with no noises. It has been inside out of the elements the whole time I had it. It's still full of the original oil. |

I wouldn't have any problem using it if it's full of oil the seals should be ok.

A transaxle doesn't really get affected by the "elements", but I still think this would probably be a good buy, (assuming the seller is honest) since the car only had ~40k miles.
Make sure you don't overpay him, however I'm sure your transaxle experiances will turn out better than mine! If I had a choice, I'd try to buy from somebody who you can physically see, and not just mail a check to. Used transaxles can usually be had for $300-650 for the 944 NAs, but this may be worth over that, since it's from a low milage car. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

Depends on how badly you need a transaxle, and how soon.
Personally though, probably up to $500, if I needed it really soon, if not finding one for ~350-400 isn't impossible. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |
