steering colum play

I have just had my car rejected for registration.
And I can not beleve what he (the inspector) knocked it back for.
The *&^%$#@ end play in the steering wheel

So does anybody know why there is a 22mm shaft going through a 24mm bearing in the ingnition switch houseing, or is there a peice missing (ie: a bush), maybe and is this a common problem.

I have just turned up a bush to fit and solve this problem so problem solved but I am very p!@#t off. (steam coming from ears subsiding) will pass on Monday

Porsche Crest 944 steering question

Hello,I have that same problem. It seems there are bearings in there.I have a Haynes manual that does'nt cover this. Also, when I turn left or right, the steering wheel moves first and then the wheels turn.I dont know if it is the steering gear or what. What was the problem with yours? Please email any info.Thanks.

Chris

As I was told just pack it out it can be tight as you want as the steering is in a bearing and should not hinder your steering. If it does you need to replace the bearing.

Steering link. It's what makes the bend between the steering column and the steering rack. Has two U-joints that wear out.

Hey SoCal

My problem is in the top bearing in the ingition switch, also the steering wheel moves in and out about 1/2 inch this comes from below the bearing in the engine bay. Apart from the movement everyting work fine.

Any help would be appreciated

Eeek!

You have a stock steering wheel? Could just need a couple of washers under the nut.

You didn't notice this before?

No it is a Momo wheel and yes I did notice it. And I checked it to see if something was missing and could not find a problem. I have just put 3 washers under the nut and problem solved. Is there somthing that goes behind the stock wheel to cover the switch block?

Is the bearing at the firewall pressed in properly? I had mine work its way out once and cause a problem similar to what you describe. Also, there is a plactic retainer just infront (towards the wheel) of the ignition switch that may have come loose as well. BTW, mine is an 83 too. What I did to get the firewall bushing/ bearing back in place is pull the carpet back, place a 2x4 and whack with a hammer working your way around it. For the plastic spacer, pull the wheel, replace as necessary. Hope that helps.
