Exhaust sealing ring for cat-back exhaust

My original exhaust on my 87 951 broke so I replaced it with an aftermarket unit. The aftermarket unit is the same size, so I'm not expecting any performance upgrade. It's a nice piece. I got it used and the seller didn't know the manufacturer.

In preparation for the installation, I got a new metal sealing ring. The part number is 92811124404.

While installing, I saw that the flange on the new exhaust piece is not recessed to accommodate the beveled ring, so I just bolted it up with no ring and no gasket at all. It was a very nice fit, seemed pretty much perfect. I went for a test drive and there's no leaks.

I was thinking that I should probably source some kind of 4 bolt exhaust gasket made for 2.5" systems. Is it common for new systems to forego that ring?

Chris
