early '85 sunroof problem

I've read numerous articles on later model sunroof repairs, but can't seem to find much on the earlier ones.

Here's my situation:
- cables are stuck in the fully extended position...
- switch works and you can hear the motor turn...
- nut on back of the motor spins when the motor turns...
- cables in roof do not move at all...
- can't turn motor by hand to lower cables... (tried to turn by inserting screw driver in slot on the nut on the back of the motor)
- had to cut headliner, remove bottom of cable boxes and manually release fingers from the roof.

Any thoughts???

Change it to the newer two gear box system. If you can find one in a salvage yard get the removeable head liner piece too.
