Power window gremlins. Passenger's only works from driver side.
My passenger-side power window does not work with the switch on the passenger side, only with the switch on the driver's side. I took out the passenger's side switch and tested it, it appears to be functioning properly. When I jumpered the contacts in the switch-plug, nothing happened. The proper plugs are live with 12 volts.
I then cleaned off the contacts in the driver's side switch for the passenger's side window. After I did that, the switch on the passenger's side would make the window go up (sometimes) but not down. The driver's side switch for the passenger's side window still worked. Very rarely, the driver's side switch will fail to move the passenger's side window. In that case, if I push the passenger's side switch (even though that has no effect on the window), the driver's side switch will operate the passenger's side window again. The driver's side window works perfectly and I'm not about to even touch that switch for fear of screwing it up. ;) Aaron |
The drivers side passenger window switch passes on the curent to the passengers door mounted window switch.
This is done through constant contact from the center of the double contact rocker to one of the contacts. So it's very important to keep track of which contact came off of what side and was turned which direction. With the pre 85.5 944's the larger switch had a U shaped spring loaded contact on one end of the contact rocker. The newer switches are bent slightly off center so the loading ball and spring forces the contacts closed. Either way it's a pain to clean and adjust the older ones. I think I have a newer switch around here I can take apart and check which way the contact rockers sit. Just for a test take the passenger side switch and swap it with the one on the drivers door. |
I had the same problem when I bought my car. The dealer replaced both passengers window switches (both sides) and the passenger window has worked fine ever since.

I have been screwing with the pass side switch on and off for years. messed with contacts, cleaned, even took contact depth readings with a micrometer to check switch travel. I swap the switches and same thing.
I've even numbered each switch so I could biuld a spreadsheet to determine best switch position so all would work. alas- still no window operation from the pass side. I have learned to live with it- It's not worth the 40 bucks each just yet to replace them all.. |
I get the same problem except the passenger side windows only works if you bang the door.
