Towing a 944..
Just wondering......I'm thinking about buying an 83 944 with manual trans, but the car is located about 900 miles away. My plan is to bring it home (if I buy it) on a car dolly, carrying the front end. So I guess my question is; do the 944 tranny's need the input shaft turning to properly lubricate or will it make it with no problems?

At the stubb axles and wire them up to the under chassis of the car with coat hangers. Check them so often to see if they have come loose.

I would rent a trailer and not a dolly. For a 900 mile trip its worth it. Last time I rented one from Uhaul it was not substantialy more expensive than the dolly. Glad to see Dans car is being kept in the family.
Good Luck

if you go with renting a dolly, don't tell them it's a Porsche you're pulling…they’ll balk…say it’s a Civic
pull the axles? definitely for an automatic as the pump doesn’t run and you’ll toast the transaxle now a 5 speed doesn’t have the same requirement so while it will take a very small load off the process (assuming it is in neutral) ...is this really necessary...really?

I wouldn't have thought it was necessary to pull the axles on a 5-speed, just (obviously) set it in neutral. NEVER tow an auto with a car dolly as carsontc said without the pump running things get real hot real fast.
If at all possible I would DEFINITLEY recommend a trailer as well. Your trip will be much more enjoyable, trust me... Good Luck!

I thought about disconnecting the axles, but if not neccessary, what a pain in the rear, out in the parking lot. I will check into a trailer, the dolly would just be alot lighter towing, but if it doesn't tow well and causes me to travel slower it wouldn't be worth it. I will probably tow the trailer or dolly down with me so I dont have to try finding one when I get there. Well if nothing else it sounds like a good road trip!!!!!

What are you using for a tow vehicle??
Most of the U-haul trailers i've seen are aluminum, so they are very light, but I don't trust the screwey "over the wheel" straps they have. I *almost* lost a C4 Corvette off the back of one once. Granted, the tires are quite a bit wider than the tires on a 944 but I had just checked the straps before heading up a steep hill and, when I turned a corner at the top of the hill and the car was hanging off the back of the trailer by the safety chains!!! I've done a LOT of trailering sense then (for the company I worked for, coast - to - coast several times a year with race cars on a open dual trailer) and I always loaded the cars. If you can, try to rent an trailer and borrow some cargo straps from someone to strap the car down, one at each corner of the car. I've never had a problem with that setup.

VT944: Tow vehicle will be my 97 F150 4x4 ext cab.
SoCal: Exactly. TSNAPCRACKLEPOP: driving it would be great but, any little problem along the way would be a huge pain in the a$$. Just want a quick trouble free trip. Ultimately a trailer is sounding like the best route, I have plenty of cargo straps and binders, as well as the over the wheel straps.

Use a trailer or a flat bed truck. About a month ago my friend had his 944 Turbo towed with a wheel lift and completely smashed in the bottom of the radiator. And the tow company said they had experiance towing exotics. They paid for the radiator. I would imagine a dolly having the same clearance problems.

Wolf, if your truck has a V8 you'll have no problem with a trailer. Be sure you have a class 3 hitch, not a step-n-tow bumper (but I'm sure you knew that)
The trailer will help ensure your quick trouble free trip... Good Luck, and let us know how it goes!

I flat tow my 944 (87) roughly 2500-5000 miles a year as a tow car behind my motorhome. I made a custom hitch system for the front of it that takes about 15 minutes to install.
Flat towing a manual 944 or using a dolley will present no harm to the transmission. There is no need to disconnect the axles. I would make sure that the transmission is full of oil first though.
