Help with speaker selection

As you all know door speakers are a pain to find for 944 because of the power window tracks(depth). I just wanted to find out what you guys are using in those 4 x 6 holes. I sent an email to crutchfield.com and they said that they don't carry any thing that will fit with out modification. Thanks, I always know if I need help with my 944, somebody will know the answer.

Those dumbasses running the e-mail dept..

Anyway, I got my whole set up from Crutchfield (as my dad was manager for them for about 10 years)

Get the Blaupaunt (spelling's off) 4x6m's, and they'll fit just fine. You have to push on them to get them in (it IS tight) but no modifications.

I have some Infinity 4622cfp 4x6 plate speakers in my doors. They fit just fine, you just have to put them in upside down (woofer at the top, tweeter at the bottom). It looks like they've replaced the 4622 with the 4652, which is deeper and probably won't fit, however the 462.1cf Kappa series speakers are the same depth as the ones I have, so they might fit. The Infinity Kappas will be more expensive than the Blaupunkts, but if you're looking for the best sound you can get without modifications to your doors, then the Infinity Kappas are the way to go.

I did a lot of research when looking for speakers to replace the stock 4x6's in my 944 (w/ power windows.) In addition to comparing the listed specs for the stock speakers to those on the shelf, I went to a local car audio specialist and actually tried to wedge in all sorts of different 4x6's (both metric and standard.)

Unsurprisingly, I found that the door depth is definitely the toughest dimension to satisfy. Some speakers were listed at less than 1-3/4" depth, but wouldn't fit because of an odd-shaped flange on the cage. Others would have fit fine if it weren't for the placement of the magnet structure too close to one side.

In the end, I personally tested only two speakers that fit in the front without modification. I'm sure there are more that exist, but in searching online and in several local audio and electronic shops, these are the two that I got to work:

- Lanzar CX 46.2 ($55, Audio Warehouse)

These are some solid 2-ways built like a tank, and the power handling is rated pretty high for a small speaker (100W). Unlike most 4x6m's these came with a speaker grill, which was necessary to gain precious depth for mounting them in the doors. I had to remove the rubber surrounds from the magnet to get them to fit.

- Kenwood KFC-4625 ($70, Crutchfield)

Make sure you get the 4625 and not the 4620, which are the standard 4x6's. I haven't permanently installed these yet, but they fit fine out of the box and sound great.
