I just Talked to my Mechanic about puting a 968 engine into the 944

Well as in my old topic when i was talking about puting a 968 engine in the 944 and many were skeptical but said it could be done. Well I just talked to my mechanic and he said that it would be NO problem putting a 968 engine into a 944...he said it would not be difficult and it would be no problem

welll it all depends on if you can get the engine for cheap....and no it wouldnt be dumb.....the whole point is to boost your perfromance so it wont be dumb......I do not want a Turbo due to the sentimental value of my car...I can just sell it.....I turned that ***** from nothing to something....Check out my pics on another topic I posted....its not like a rebuild...i am sure you can find a 968 engine pretty cheap if you look right....I will check out the labor costs thoguh.

If your car has so much "sentimental" value to you, keep it the way it is!

Just because you start with the car you have now, and change it piece by piece doesn't mean it'll still be the same car!

If you wanna keep this car, and go fast (as in seriously go fast), look into raising the compression, dropping in a 944 turbo engine in (which makes more sense then dropping a 968 engine in, if you ask me), or the best option may be to find a wrecked S2, modify that a bit, and stick it in. (I'm sure you can get 250+ from an S2 engine, raising the compression, swapping cams, head work, etc.).

The thing is not that it's do-able, or that labor won't be THAT much (oh it will!), etc.

Do me a favor, ask your mechanic how many engines he's pulled out of 968s, then ask him how many swaps he's done...

I don't care what he says, clutch is different, all engine controls are entirely different, the 968 engine will even need more fuel pressure than a 944 engine. If you truly want to keep the LABOR alone under at least $2k, you need to locate something close to a complete 968, specially if you have an early 944, which aint gonna happen for less than $5k at the least.

More sensible option would be finding a complete 944 turbo engine, with DME, which is possible to do for $3k or so, but then you're going to need to get the brakes on your car updated, along with the torque tube, the suspension, transmission, clutch, etc, etc...

And then you won't have the same car you do now, would you? See where I'm getting at?

Is your money tree in bloom or are you stoned? Realy consider what your gonna end up with when your done. Will you ever get your money back on a resale? No. Some of us older gear heads can atest to how we pissed $$$$$ away on our machines while having bouts of tunnel vision. I see 5-6k easy on your project. If you have a donor car and the time and experience, go for it but i cant see the sense in buying the parts and paying a mechanic for the labor. Ahmet has it down and I'm not saying don't do I would just hate to see another young guy piss his $$$$$$ away. Hell, consider Nitrous or a supercharger. Just my opinion and good luck.

I'd agree with the rest of the group...

Besides, aside from the engine, the other big attraction (for me) of a 968 is having the 6 speed trans, and you won't. 968's are available in the low teens pricewise, by the time you buy a used motor and pay for the labor, it might have been less expensive to buy a early 968...

last month's exellence did a s2 into a early 944 good article and made some sense he bought a wreck and did it himself.
