Whoa, my Camshaft belt idler bearing is missing...
After running my 84' 944 for the past 5 months, I've finally gotten around to replacing both belts and to my surprise I'm completely missing the camshaft belt idler. Obviously, I'm going to install a new one, but am very amazed that my belts survived this trauma. I have no way of knowing how long, or for how many miles this thing was missing since I don't have the history from the previous owner. I do however have a new found respect that these belts and the system is robust. But before I get to carried away:
1. does anyone have any rationale for not installing this bearing? 2. what does this bearing mount to? It sits adjacent to the water pump pulley. Perhaps the mechanic was replacing the unit that it mounts to and just forgot to install it. 3. Its function appears to be to limit whip since it is positioned at the longest segment of the camshaft belt. 4. Finally, how long should the job of replacing both belts take from start to finish? Thanks, Scott |

Thanks, Scott 1) I cant think of any reason to leave the roller off! 2)A bolt holds the cam idler on (not a stud) 3)yes its function is to limit whip 4) Start to finish (just the belts)about 2-3 hours...taking it easy - im sure it could be done in an hour if you rushed it. The balance shafts can be a little tricky - overall its an easy job. |

I can do mine in a couple of hours because I have done it twice before and have access to a car lift. Some things are easier to do from below. I made a special wrench to adjust the cam and balance belt idlers. Ground up an old offset one to fit just right.
Pully stops whip, you're right. |
