Any parts I should keep before selling off this roller??
Hey all!
Got a 1979 924 yesterday as I needed some of the parts off of it for our 1978 924 rebuild. The body is in great shape, so will sell it to someone who needs a roller. But before I do, are there any "known" parts that usually go bad, or that are good to have spares of? I am thinking things like "the wiper motor bushings go bad, so keep extras" or stuff like that..? Also I think this one is a 5 speed (linkage is disconnected), so I might have to put it in our 1978 924 that currently has a 4 speed in it (unless thats not possible...?) Thanks for any insight! the water bottle maybe ,they tend to discolor that one might be replaced, Id save the alternator too.
last summer I took a volvo apart saved every nut bolt electrical part and the whole harness, front end motor trany and suspension the body paid for the tow-job to the scrapyard. i'd say save every electrical part and maybe things like the wiper arms. maybe the fuel injectors, You wont be sorry for saving small parts but I dont know wheat the next owner might want, tires maybe ? rims might be a weird 4 bolt pattern? the collapsable spare perhaps? any fuel in it ? ;-) |

95% of the parts you will never need or use but the parts you do use will make it worth the trouble.
I recently got a bit stuck with a wiring issue so I spread the whole salvaged harness across the floor, its like a 3D wiring diagram, very handy. I really like having spare electrical parts, easy to swap things for troubleshooting. just the exercise of taking everyting apart is a good way to learn how things work. some bit like plastic panels with clips, well they degrade and break so you might try to predict what you might want for that reason. as other cars age some of these susceptible parts become hard to get. It might only be plastic window trim or something you would not put much value on. I have some chrome trim where the special plastic clips are crumbled, a bit hard to find. i wanted to change a headliner in another car so I took the roof panel, its cardboard with foam, by taking that out, I broke a bunch of plastic and clips, decided maybe I can use indoor outdoor carpet and glue it up there rather than trying to take that whole cardboard thing out. it wasn't so much that its hard to remove but hard to complete without breaking something. at first I thouhgt I;d soak it in epoxy to make it stronger , cover it, put it back in the other car.. now after removing the one from scrapping a car , Im thinking a "repair in place" plan might save dealing with a bunch of brittle and broken plastic bits light lenses degrade too, some are available aftermarket, some parts are not, and are hard to get Every car that sits in the sun has degraded plastic lenses. Likely the 944 is common enough to have some aftermarket parts or you can buy lenses and things from other cars. this thing is a bit less common so maybe there are similar parts that commonly fail. I listed parts ofr sale and the most common ask was for lenses. some in europe want NA parts too In volvo the square headlights are an example, they weren't used in Europe so its a bit of a custom feature and so they are in demand just because people want to change things, they dont just want the lights but the chrome surrounds etc. similar happens here with people wanting euro bumpers etc. they want to go to car shows and have people marvel over the "custom bolt on parts".. they aren't unusual in europe but here they are considered somewhat of a neat mod. I put all the fasteners in a bin and find myself often looking for some fairly common part like some nut or bolt I lost etc. I didn't save doors, But things like the motors for windows, wipers etc. if you fill your basement with parts, it is hard to get them to pay rent so if it prevents you from that then its probably just poor economics. there is an online wrecker that has 944 parts etc, maybe he'd be interested or could offer advice. |

Do NOT bother trying to swap that 5-speed in; sell it to someone who already has that, it's one year only and not a great one as such... long story, go to 924.org and read all about it, then join us on the forums at 924board.org...

If you can afford it, pull the parts you need now and put the rest in long term storage as a donor car for a piece that you can't predict will be NLA in the future and critical to you getting to the track or a cars and coffee, just saying from experience.

I am going to sell the things I know I won't be using (like the power flag mirrors that come with the 79 that don't belong on my 78). Thanks! |

Speaking of NLA, I would trade this whole dang car for a new set of fuel delivery lines... sourcing this jetronic stuff is killing me...
