Parking brake adjustment

Just tried adjusting the brake with haynes manual and clarks instructions. When I had the rear up and no wheels installed I couldn't rotate the rotor at all on two clicks of the lever, but once I lowered the car that same two clicks didn't hold jack squat. The shoes are almost brand new, so they shouldn't be the cause.

So from the hub, I adjusted the adjustment wheel until I couldn't move the rotor at all. Then I did the same on the other side. After that, I loosened the adjustment wheel so that I could rotate the wheel effortlessly. Next I raised the lever for two clicks and adjusted at the lever so that I could move the rotor only with a great force, I even tightened a little more, so that I couldn't rotate the rotor at all. Then I checked that on release of the lever, both wheels rotated freely. After that I lowered the car and noticed that the brake hadn't improved at all.

Now I adjusted just from the lever so that with two click I can't push the car forwards at all, but with lever released the car rolls well. But if I drive the car and pull the lever as much as I can. The brake force is not that great, wheels are not even close to locking up. I can raise the lever easily 4 click and the 5th click is very hard. Also the release button gets really hard to push once I've pulled the lever all the way up.

I think I'll try my luck at the inspection, If they won't allow it to pass, then i'll have the whole winter to work on the parking brake. I quess the cable is rusted and binds somewhere.

Did It by these instructions, that netted me 0,1 kN on drivers side and 0,3 kN on passenger side more brake force. Luckily the inspector passed the car regardless of the weak handbrake. The cable must bind somewhere, now I have the whole winter to look at that.

Also he said that my transaxle leaks a bit too much Oil, seemed to come from the gear selector about which there was already a thread on the forum.

OP,
my car also has that slow leak from shift rod at top of the gear box, the whole side of the tranny is (rather was) covered with thick grime. So, since I have nothing to do, I will replace that seal, too, and the a paper gasket on the opposite side of the gear box.
