HELP! ENGINE PROBLEM!!!

Well I was Getting ready to go to school this morning and I went to pick up my friends...which live like 30 seconds from my house....Anyways I get out to wait for them and i here this sound from the engine...sort of like a Diesel Truck....He says something doesnt sound right and so do I...I get in the car and Warning light is on and the oil is down to 1 quarter...Yesterday everything was fine.... ON Monday I went to get my oil changed and they said I didnt need to...oil was clean. It was because it was in the body shop for a month. Does anyone know whats wrong with it?

What about the oil pressure gauge?

How long did the car run like this? If it were not longer than a minute or two, and at idle the damage may not be as bad as you'd think. Too much oil pressure isn't necessary for lubrication at idle, presence of oil alone isn't too bad, specially for a short time.

(You mean you had about a quart of oil left in the engine?)

So did you drive the car, add more oil? Leave it there? If you can provide more info, I shall try to help you further.

What about the strange noise? And how did you know there was only 1 quart of oil in it?

Dave951 02-21-2001 02:03 PM

I think he meant the gauge was at a quarter.

How does the Mack play into a guage problem?

***UPDATE*** Yes i meant the guage not quarts...heh sorry i was typing too fast....

http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/frown.gif It might be a big problem...In my last oil change I found little metal shrapnels and i thought it might be hte bearing....

He just told me that it wasnt the punp...he said something clogged it up and i am afraid that my bearing is going and i will need a rebuild http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/frown.gif this is just my estimation i hope its something else http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/frown.gif

Well I hope I dont have to rebuild as he put this engine in before I bought the car.......Man....Will a 944 S engine fit fine? or should i just go for a rebuild if the damage is that bad

Depends on what you've got for problems. you may get a way with just rod bearings. On the other hand you may need 1 new rod, and a new crank.

Also, when you get it apart you may find that the block needs to be bored, and you need a set of oversize pistons.

Any way you look at it it's going to cost big bucks.

What gauges do 944s of your year have...oil level and oil pressure?
Which gauge went down to a quarter, the level or the pressure?
If it was the pressure did it go to a quarter bar or a quarter way??
Did it sound grindy, what do you mean deisel?

No front engined P-car ever came with an "oil level" indication of any type, except the "not enough" indicator, otherwise known as the idiot light http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif.

oh http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif

I knew there was something to do with oil level on 944s, just that idiot light...wasn't sure.
If the oil pressure went down that much so fast, there must ba a huge problem, unless your oil pressure sender got screwed, but I doubt it since you heard a noise Raf.

Wait a minute. Did you say "friends"? How can you fit 3 or more full grown people in your 944 and not have them complain?

kaffine krazed 02-21-2001 10:12 PM

I have had me in the back seat at 6' my brother in the passenger seat at 6'4" and my mom in the drivers seat at 5'4" not the best fit but it beats walking http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

When my dad bought the 944 back in 83, it became our family car until 1987 when we got a Mercury. My parents rode up front, and my sister 13-17 years old, my brother 12-16 years old and myself 3-7 years old (at the time) rode in the back seat. I sat on the hump since I was the youngest/smallest.

Just tonight I squeezed my 3 of my friends in it and went for a ride. It's amazing how slow it is when it is weighted down.

Who ever said that our back seat is unusable? http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

**********Update #2******************
Well I got my car back today....It was a valve that was leaking or something http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif......he said that this is the second one in 10 years...he says it never happens....well It would have cost $200 new but he pulled one out of an old motor and I just paid $25 for the towing...This guy is great... I am so freakin happy.

Oh and yes My friends complain...everday.....It kinda funny cause one of them is 6 foot 2 220 poundes...and he sits in the passenger back seat...he has to sit on the seatbelt http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif.

If you only have 1 quart of oil....your in deep caca!.......if you have metal shavings coming from somewehre inside the engine, your in even deeper caca....I would probably check the oil for water or coolant for oil.......The noise was probably from the bearings not getting enough oil to make them float the crank while turning ......I bet some bearings are spinning inside and if i were you..........I'd get a second job to pay for it........That is probably the most expensive thing that you could do was to blow and engine due to no ubrication......check the cam system too for lack of lubing.....god I'm glad I'm not you little buddy! anyway my heart goes out to you if this was the case.....if not.....Whew!

vas deferens 02-23-2001 01:39 AM

whoops silly me! I neglected to read your post regarding the valve being the culprit.....by the way....get more information about this valve so that I could enter it into my Troubleshooting File....Waht oil valve was he talking about?
Anyway sorry I "shot first without checking the target". I'm glad that your not working 4 mroe jobs to pay for a rebuild.......find out about the valve?.........vas deferens

Troubleshooting chart? I have also been collection the 'best' results of various problems/solutions posted. Ever thought of sharing/swapping?

todd951 02-23-2001 09:12 AM

I think he was referring to the oil pressure relief valve. Sometimes it gets stuck open, and causes the oil pressure to drop off. I think Ahmet had the same problem a while back and replaced his valve. He might be able to tell you more about it.

AMCPorsche924Powerhaus! 02-23-2001 02:08 PM

Well if this is the second one that has gone in ten years, and this mechanic keeps pulling it from used cars, they might just keep going bad...valves are generally something you should buy new, but then agian being a teen with a Porsche is hard so its your decision and all, but make sure the used one was better than the one in your car, and not going to do the same thing in a couple of weeks. Also make sure that it wasn't just an afteraffect of something really wrong in your engine, like a bunch of metal bits getting in the system and sticking the valve open or wrecking it up so it is disfunctioning.
