Air Conditioning Switch - 1986 944

The other day I tried turning on the air conditioning in my 86 944 and the switch would not turn the compressor on and instead kept popping out. I fugure the switch is bad. Does anyone know if installing a new switch is as simple as just popping out the old one and plugging in a new one (replacing window and sunroof switches are pretty easy). Or do I have to remove the dash (and if so, how do I do that)
