Price For Oil Leak
Ok, thanks to everyone for helping me diagnose my balance shaft end cover leak. Now comes the time to get it fixed. I have decided to have the whole project done, timing belts, both balance shafts resealed, and water pump. So basically everything up front replaced and the shafts resealed. I had a quote done yesterday by a Porsche only repair shop here in Denver the quote was for 1,200. Does this sound about right?

Like I said the balance shaft job alone is a real pain as the balance shaft belt must be removed and since your in there you might as well replace all the front seals and rollers/tensioners , what i would do is buy all the parts new rollers, seal kit, balance O rings, belts and w pump and then pay for the labor if your not into doing this your self also dont forget to get the special sealant made for Porsche locktite 754 it is orange 50 ml bottle will do to reseal the balance shaft housings............ 1200 hun is a lot and i would only go to a Place that does porsches as this type of job if not done by someone that knows what they are doing could screw things up really bad........ Now there is another way but it is the bandade you can clean the end caps with a good degreaser and putty up the ends of the balance shafts with oil resistant RTV let it dry over nite B4 you run the engine ( this is only a bandade and will eventually leak again ) I know this to a mechanic is sacreligious but if your not interested in spending the cash right now.............Stan |

No, the money is not the issue at all. But yes the shop is doing all the front seals, all the balance shaft related seals, timing belt, balance belt, and water pump. I just want the whole thing done and not have to worrie about it, so the money is worth it to me.

1200 buckaroonies for all that is pretty good. It cost me a little more than that to have everything you mentioned except the water pump replaced. The upper did not leak until later. By that time I had gained some experience with these cars and did it myself.

Front seal kit - $59
Toothed Tensioner Roller Auxi - 34.9 Balance Belt - 29.9 Smooth Tensioner Roller Auxi - 32.5 Toothed Camshaft Tesioner Roller - 33.0 Timing Belt - 9.9 (I will not go with this one.) Smooth Camshaft Roller - 34.0 Water Pump (Rebuild) - 109.9 Total appx. $350 I got these price from the Europroducts. And our local foreign auto mechanic (Posche experienced) quoted me $300-400 to put them on. I will check my front engine to see how bad it is. And let him put everything on. Scott, $1200, are you talking about dealer parts, including brand new water pump? Is my deal worth to do? Eugene |

No, they are an independant shop here in denver. This is parts-and-labor. They did tell me that the water pump would be a "rebuilt" unless I requested that it be new.

Who in Denver are you having do the work? I've got a alightly similar situation, my lower balance shaft cover is leaking and I am going back and forth about doing it myself or having it done. I am in Denver also, and would appreciate you posting how the experience went. Thanks. |

Could you ask them what the labor only cost is?

Scott-
Like RJ asked, who in Denver is doing the work? I am in Denver too and have a good, reliable mechanic. It sounds a little high, by a couple hundred bucks maybe. I love my shop and their prices seem really fair. I just recently had all of that done, and more, and the bill was just under a grand. My $0.02... ------------------ Timm '88 924S |

I have heard of them, that's where my boss takes his 911SC. They are one of the pricier shops in town, but I've heard good things about them. He won't take his car anywhere else.
I take my car to Wright's German Automotive in Arvada. But, I also live on the north end of town. Good luck. ------------------ Timm '88 924S |

And yes, the "book" says 8-8.5 hours of labor for everything on the front-end.

Tischer Porsche in Maryland did my 88 944 belts, tensioners, rollers, leaking cam seals and water pump for $1700, so it sounds like a fair price. btw: Mine was a new water pump. 2500 mile belt retensioning was include with this price.
