Question rear hatch release

suddenly my rear hatch release will not. since i bought the car (89 944 s2) the rear key unlock did not work but the inside driver kick panel switch worked fine. until now. the motor does not try to cycle, the fuse is good, is the only way of manually releasing hatch crawling in back and removing hatch liner to access motor area? i previously checked the microswith on the rear key unlock.
the switch is good. i will check the switch on the kick panel tonight. one other question ... is the hatch release in any way connected to the alarm and door lock system. the reason for this question is since the hatch release stopped working the door unlock and alarm are acting goofy also. for instance when i try to lock the doors from the inside console they immediatly unlock after i lock them with the switch.... any ideas and advice would be appreciated. i do have the haynes manual that covers the na
models to 89 but i don't know if the s2 wiring is the same..
thanks again in advance for all your help

Check if there is Electricity going to the motors. If the fuse is good, and no electricity, then you may have a break somewhere in the wiring. If you have electricity then the other possibility is that the motors died.

I had a similar problem with my S2 at the weekend, although if I listened carefully I could the motor running quietly but no release. Try listening carefully, you should hear a faint hum. The motor is very quiet when the cable has come off.

The cable to the locks had come off at the motor, there is a loop at the end of the cable which goes over a shaft on the motor and is held on by a circlip. My circlip has gone so now and then the cable comes off. Yes you'll have to crawl in and fix it. Motor is on the left when you're in the trunk.

yes the tailgate is connected to the alarm but the alarm is a mystery to me.

Central locking could be unrelated : in my case the same trouble was caused by one of the nylon rods from actuator to lock snapping.
