capillary action has a habit of defying gravity and reasonable logic.
dip a towel in your cofee then try to explain by what means the cofee climbs up out of the cup, seemingly defying gravity.. That's due to capillary action. and surface tension is key.

I had a volvo parked in such a way the gutter for the trunk lid wanted to colect water but the car was broken and not so easy to move..

so what to do..

I draped a rope around it and let it hang , that could pull the water up and out of the little trough where it was settling, in a similar manor to a siphon.

I do similar in my boat, it has an area near the motor where it has a little trough, it likes to collect water so I keep a rope there, dangling, and it pulls the water up and over the top of the rim, drips from the end of the rope. weird, but it does work.

anytime you have a small gap it will collect water despite its orientation and despite gravity.

if you increase the gap to the point where it breaks the surface tension it stops happening , you can instead fill the void.

when laying planks , like building an outdoor deck it is often common to use a nail as a spacer. less gap will cause rot. more gap allows the water out and then airdflow helps it dry. planks grow across the grain as they collect water and shrink as they dry so in this case there is also wood expansion and contraction involved. if you ignore the fact that the gap is important and lay them too close , It will cause premature rot.
