944 Steel Key?
My 944 has a steel key. Why? Why doesn’t it have a brass key like other cars?

Strange. Is your key really magnetic?

Magnetic? No, it’s just steel. The original key was steel, so I had a duplicate made in steel. As soon as I insert the key (without turning it) all electric items come to life (clock & radio).

A magnet sticks to my OEM Huf 968 key. It's mild steel as are many European key blanks. Some locksmiths won't cut them but being mild steel good equipment will cut them just fine.

It's steel maybe because they were afraid a brass key would shear off trying to open the hatch manually.

Hmmm, this makes sense because the hatch key does require a bit of forceful twist to open.
