Wind/car cover ripped off side mirror

Hi,

Recently a windstorm caused my car cover to rip off my side mirror, see link 2 posts down.

2 questions:

1) Having been in this mirror before, I believe I need to take the mounting panel off of the side of the car and get the post to kind of snap into the mirror body. Can anyone point me toward a walkthrough of this? I remember finding one online years ago but I can't find anything while searching recently.

2) The other picture is a shot of the mirror motor assembly. Note the plug sub-assembly. That takes a special tool to remove those socket-type connectors. Would someone be able to point me toward this connector and the type of tool needed to remove the wires without ruining them?

Thanks in advance!

GHEN

the tool (the first tools aree flimsy, but would work for one or two uses):

Both are available from amazon.
The existing connectors are dirty, I spray they with WD-39 in order to help with removal.

I'm afraid that you have broken the hollow bolt that attaches the two halves of the mirror frame (and allows the electric wires to route through the stem). It is number 9 in the attached jpeg.

I will also warn you that overcoming the spring pressure to get that bolt started can be quite a chore. I believe that Porsche even has a special tool for tightening that bolt.

Good luck...

You don't happen to know the name/PN of that tool, do you?

Dang, I don't have any. I'll have to go with the updated formula .

Thanks George!
Sorry, no... IIRC, a 10 or 12 mm triple square socket with about 20 percent of the tool removed to allow for the wiring to stay in place while tightening. Since you are removing the wires, just use the correct size triple square.

(did a bit more research: The tool was called a mirror socket and made by Baum Tools, item number P1001. Unfortunately, no longer available.)
