Rear Hatch won't open

I recall a while back seeing posts on the rear hatch release, that is how I learned how to open manually from crawling inside.

This was going to be the next project, now worse. Went to release hatch from inside and the rod from the passenger side broke off from the rotating mechanism. So now I have 2 layers to fix

1. The rod attachment
2. The original troubleshooting of hatch not opening with key or release button.
