The next step. . . . . ?

_ I am about to tackle the instrument panel. The issues to be addressed are sticky engine temp and fuel gauges, reattaching the wobbly spedo. lighting the spedo, fixing the little green blinker lights, and the big one, making the tachometer read at a decent level.

_ What do you think is the problem with the tachometer? It reads between 4-4.5K at idle. This is obviously not right, as releasing the clutch like that stalls it cold. I have heard that you can calibrate the tachometer. Is there a 'wonder screw' somewhere that will magically fix my problem?

_ Barring this, there are four possible problems (that I can think of):

1. The signal is bad. I am under the impression that the signal is electronic and comes from the distributor. As it seems to be just reading high, this does not seem to be the problem.

2. The needle slipped. Can I just turn the needly back 45 degrees or so? That would make it show idle at about 1000, and hopefully not give any trouble.

3. The unit is just plain broken. I can get a new one for $41. This would solve the problem unless the signal was indeed bad. While that is not a bad price, I am not too crazy about buying parts to see if I can fix a problem.

4. The everpresent 'bad ground.' I notice that the needle goes up and down a bit then the blinker is on.....

_ How do I know when it is reading true? More in the next couple of days, I may take the panel off tomorrow, partly as a practace run and partly to fix the spedo. lights.

The tach's on the 924's get their signal from the dist. They tend to burn out resistors or diodes. Might be a "wonder screw" in it but I think it will not fix your problem.

The $45 fix seems like the answer. Get a quote from a speedo shop and compare.

Yes bad grounds -- a real pain.

To fix lighting speedo, if bulbs work.

Usually the reflectors are worn, there is a silver coating which goes dull (hence they don't reflect the light up onto the speedo)

You can buy replacement reflectors but theres no need.

Get some aluminium foil (for cooking etc) and glue to the underside of the reflectors. The speedo lights up like a christmas tree!

Worked for me anyway.
