944 Is it a 1983 or 1984

How can I tell if a 944 is 1983 or 1984?

i believe the plate for date of manufacture is on the driver's side of the engine bay, near the windshield

So, my "born on" date per the plate on the drivers side just forward of the windsheild says 1982 even though it was purchased new in 83. Is this truly an 82 model?

Depends on the month. In order to have '83 944's on the salesfloor, building had to start in '82. Most manufacturer's will start making next year's car up to 4-5 month's before the year the car is destined to be. Mine was born on 3/83.

if it was made may 82 or later, it is an 83 model.

Can you tell by the vin# exactly which number your car was off the production line?

The last digits of the VIN do not ascend in a chronological linear fashion. For example, I have serial number 00720, but my car is NOT the 720th 944 produced. Porsche saved whole blocks for special orders, such as my car, which was special ordered by a rich royalty guy in Saudi Arabia.
So, the best way to find out the exact placement of your car in the production history is to contact porsche directly and request not only a "birth certificate" but a full history of the vehicle.
