Aluminum Torque Tube now a Reality

Well guys, the aluminum torque tube is now being tested in a 400hp street car. So far, it looks like it runs very smoothly. It weighs about 24lbs less than the stock unit and can use off the shelf bearings. If all continues as has to this point, they'll be available in about a week or so while I make up a couple more.

It's made from 1/4 wall 6061T6. The aluminum driveshafts for 1000hp drag cars are made from 1/8 wall and a smaller diameter and those guys develop over 1100ft/lbs of torque, so I seriously doubt that any of us will break one of my tubes.

Brandon- yes yes yes & yes. Part is milled, part is turned, one part is CNC. In order to rebuild this tube, all that is necessary is to cut the safety wires, unbolt the bearing carriers and withdraw the driveshaft. The carriers are then removed from the driveshaft and new bearings installed. As the manuals say, assembly is the reverse.

I've a small machine shop in the garage. We haven't established an exact price yet, but will shortly. I'm also looking into having a couple of places carry them. We're also getting together a short shift kit. It will replace the shifter lever and any rubber parts in the rear for a very positive, shorter shift. Also in the planning stages is an oil filter relocation kit. It will allow you to remote mount the oil filter, add some extra capacity and help a bit with some extra oil cooling. The last project underway and is still being examined for feasibility is a dedicated cooling system for the intercooler. I've seen a couple of systems out there, like Auqamist (no cooling when you run out of water) and DEI (no cooling when you run out of CO2). If my idea pans out, you won't have that problem. Like I said though, it's still in the planning stages.

My tranny will be out at the end of the month. I'm installing an aluminum flywheel, race clutch, torque-bias and maybe your torque tube!! How much and what is your time frame for sale to everyone?

I'm curious as to how much that will drop your car's overall weight, compared to a stock 944?
