plugged fuel filter.

I pulled the pump and fiter out.
I bought the car after the hose leaked , just as it exits the tank it rotted through. it had leaked all the fuel out. it also sat a long time in a non operational state.

wow that screen wasn't just plugged on the outside, it was so full of crud. I had to drill through it with a screwdriver to even poke around inside ..

what was inside was a solid residue..
I dont want to pull the transaxle right now, so maybe I can pull out the float and clean by flushing it into a bucket and wiping from above..

maybe I need a temporary in line filter?

the hose from the tank, I had some good quality thick stuff but it seems either a bt too small or too tight. I can order the hose , it has a little bend itn it but maybe just decent fuel lien is ok there. I dont know if that molded bend is that important.

that line between, I guess I shoudl replace it.. just because its old, new filter and pump for sure ..

I was execting to see that screen blocked with goo, but i wans't expecting it to be completely full of hardened up stuff ..

figured I'd make my own screen up, using brass gasoine screen and save a hundred or so but I opted to just order a new one.

ill service the injectors..

I wonder if someome put somethign besides gasoline in here or if this is normally what happens when it sits so long.. wow what a lot of solid crud.

could be a blessing in disgise , maybe thats why 12 years ago the car failed to start.. hence why it became mine..

It didn't stop with a valve and piston crash or anything.. I hope htis isn't a result of sugar in the gas. I assume it''s just hardened up old fuel, what a mess.

Ill plan to recoat the tank but Id like to drive it , see what the clutch does, I can probably do the clutch and remove tank to tank clean in one operation. I assume it has the rubber center and that it is toast too.

Ill set a bucket under the opening and run a hose and a pump into the tank let is wash out for a while , maybe i can see from the top and do some mopping about inside.

when i dumped thre filter out from the engine side, it dint look plugged or solid just stinky old gas in there, so I guess the filter did its job.

on an aside,,, Im trying to fix a volvo 740 it was just a spare parts car but it also sffered from a simialr plugged up filter and dead pump, changed the in tank pump. the fuel pumo in that ran and made noise but I don't think it's making any pressure. filter was plugged too. prepump was dead.. I guess sometimes the main pumps die but still run.and make noiuse.. it sounds a bit strange. I tried filling a gas can but it seemed a bit slow. I think it shoud move a lot more fuel. if I can make this crappy old porsche pump start the volvo 740 Ill be lucky lol

by extending the hose to the fuel rail, its now a few feet long, that helped , I was then able to safely put the line in a gas can rather than trying to balance my jerry can over the engine.. Im hoping the same fittings are iused int he 944 then I can use the same adapter.

I made up an adapter using the end of a volvo pump to tank line and the end of a fuel rail. then added a T fitting for my fuel pressure guage. I couldnt get it to move the needle on my FP gauge at all in the volvo.. also that wont start or even fire.

I will try to see if this old porsche pump will work in the volvo 740 , just as an experiment.. its very similar..
I ll try to flush it.. see if it can still run and pump. I just wanted to nbe able to move that 740 around my yard and get it running. I may ever drive it so I din't want to spend on a new pump but nicer to keep things operatiol ..that car is basically a rolling pile of spare parts for my 740 wagin , my daily driver. I just hate having another car I can't move.

all this could be avoided by siphoning the tank and running it a bit more often... thats probably a good approach if you don't actually drive a car for a dozen years or so. dump the 1 year old gas in some other car just to change it every year or so.

Yep, finally got around to it! That screen was worse than I expected, definitely a mess in there.

that short run of flexible hose seems to be only available as OEM at a rediculous price.

I want to order metric to standard thread adaptors, then I can use standard thread anodized aluminum parts and a flexible high pressure capable hose between the pump and filter.

I found a local vendor that says they can help me ID the parts , mostly they do american hot rods so they said if I take it to them, they can help me. Ill need to get the adapters somewhere else. metric fittings seem weirdly unavailable.

I know someone did the work of creating a nice parts list, with a pic of such parts. it was actually for a 16 valve or maybe one made after 85. might have been for a turbo. but I thought that could help me ID the fittings I will need for this.

I wondered if someone may have that file , it was posted a while ago.

Im instrerested in any siuggestings or help to ID all the fittings I need. I can likely do similar on the fuel rail. I know others have done so.

I'm not very familiar with the fittings the terminology and how they are ID'd.

my objective is to make it safe so I dont have a fuel fire, and to not spend more than I can afford. I did find it on Ebay, the OEM one, but at a rediiculous price. Rock A doesntl list it.

the hot rod place said they have hose and fititngs and its often done on fuel injected hot rods, to modify fuel liines. the OEM stuff used a metric crimp machine and and that seems rare , they mentioed Aand N fititngs, stands for army and navy.. Means standard thread patterns not metric,,

Its fine with me if the parts between the metric to standard adapters are not metric.

i do work with plumbing instructors I fix all their threading machines and such so I can probably ask them some questions.

I'm tempted to just leave the flex line , It wont leak as is, but its probably more safe to replace any rubber part in the fuel system.
sugestions appreciated.

that green pump would not turn, I know it shoudl be wet to test it, I gave it 12V and it only sparked the terminals. I had the notion maybe it could start my volvo spare parts car, No. it's just garbage.

thank you.
