is there a DIY fix for swapping shifters?

my shifter leather ripped off the other day........really old and worn. is there a way i can easily chante the shifter to accomodate an aftermarket knob with a round receptacle?

Yes. Call GPR Parts. They make a small adapter to go from our oddball flat one to a normal round one for about 19 bucks. It works best with a set screw style as opposed to a screw on. GPR also has Momo knobs, very nice.
